Deputy Ward Lead (SMH Band 6) - Inpatient Unit
We are seeking to find an experienced Registered Nurse (Adult) to join our inpatient team as a Deputy Ward Lead. You will have a passion and enthusiasm for palliative care and all that a specialist hospice service can provide to its community. Ideally, you will have experience within a hospice ward setting, but applicants with experience in other areas of palliative and end-of-life care settings should apply.
We expect you to adopt a flexible approach to the role, which encompasses leadership, management, and clinical responsibility. The successful applicant must be able to evidence examples of their clinical leadership and managerial skills and experience.
You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a team player approach with a keenness to mentor and develop both yourself and the team.
Main Duties of the Job
This is an exciting opportunity to join our inpatient team and shape the delivery of care that we provide. You will be a key member of the nursing team responsible for role modeling good care. We have a Quality Improvement Programme that you would play an active role in.

1. Regularly take the nurse in charge role and ensure the smooth operational and effective running of the shift.
2. Support junior staff in developing the skills for this role.
3. Proactively manage the staffing rosters to ensure appropriate safe clinical staffing and skill mix is achieved.
4. Provide strong leadership, support, and guidance to colleagues in monitoring the planning, delivery, and evaluation of individualized patient care.
5. Provide clinical expertise within the specialty, particularly in relation to symptom management.
6. Work alongside IPU Lead to manage all areas of staff performance, including conducting annual appraisals and performance reviews.
The 37.5 hours per week are worked over a 4-week roster period including weekends and nights when required. The shift times are 07:30-20:00 and 19:30-08:00.

Job Responsibilities
1. Provide support to the IPU Lead with all aspects of management of the inpatient unit.
2. Deputise for the IPU Lead in their absence.
3. Provide clinical leadership and support to junior colleagues to plan, monitor, evaluate and ensure evidence-based care to patients staying on the inpatient unit.
4. Act as a role model while providing specialist knowledge within the palliative care environment and working as part of the team while supporting and mentoring.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Degree or equivalent, or can demonstrate study to Degree level).
* NMC Registered Nurse (Adult) with active NMC PIN (no restrictions on practice).
* Student Nurse Assessor/Supervisor course.
* Evidence of recent study/courses attended within relevant areas to a Specialist Palliative Care setting.
* Recruitment and selection training.
* Absence Management Training.
* Management Course.
* Advanced Communication course.
* Edward Jenner Leadership Course or similar.
* Teaching course e.g., PTLLS / DTLLS.
Experience
* Previous experience in an inpatient Palliative Care setting.
* Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice/information to patients and relatives.
* Ability to prioritize own workload and that of others.
* Experience in and/or supervision of junior staff members.
* Experience of intravenous injections, syringe drivers, infusions, endotracheal suctioning, insertion of urinary catheters, and other similar procedures.
* Previous experience of practicing in a variety of clinical settings and teams.
* Demonstrate experience of clinical governance and risk management.
* Ability to make judgments related to symptom management of patients that involve complex facts or situations, analyzing what is needed and comparing a range of options.
* Experience within the community setting.
