About the role
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Wastewater Maintenance team as a Team Lead (known internally as Sewerage Team Leader), managing a group of up to 12 Operatives responsible for carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across the wastewater networks in our region. This role will see you join fast-paced team in our central area, where you will coordinate and develop your team to enhance asset performance while strictly adhering to NWL policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
As Team Lead, you will demonstrate our company values by providing strong leadership and a consistent approach to training and supporting the development of your team members.
The successful candidate will ensure that all operational practices are effectively implemented, delivering regular updates to the team to maintain compliance with legislative and quality standards.
You will manage a field based team who travel across the Northeast to maintain our sewerage network. By performing essential sewer maintenance, the team plays a critical role in protecting our customers and the environment, reducing the risk of flooding and preventing sewer escapes.
This role provides comprehensive training to help the successful candidate gain knowledge of the various technical aspects required. We are looking for someone with transferrable skills who is eager to grow and develop into this position.

A typical day begins with a team huddle to align on the action plan, set and agree clear expectations, and address any potential issues that could impact performance, such as vehicle availability or performance, equipment functionality, access, or capability concerns
Throughout the day, you'll conduct regular check-ins with key stakeholders to ensure tasks are properly assessed, assigned, and scheduled for the day, the week, and beyond.
A top priority is ensuring the safety of the team, with the goal that everyone goes home safe every day. The team leader's presence and availability play a critical role in achieving this. Daily responsibilities include conducting site visits during pre-planning and while jobs are in progress to help reinforce a strong safety culture.
Managing our essential resources, such as vehicles, equipment and people is a key part of the role. This involves overseeing servicing and repairs, managing absences, coordinating training, monitoring team performance, and ensuring adequate staffing and resourcing to meet operational needs.
About you
The ideal candidate will be experienced at managing a busy workload while maintaining a strong focus on customer and stakeholder needs. Proven leadership experience is essential, as well as the ability to use clear communication skills to regularly empower and motivate your team.
You will have proven experience in working within a multidisciplinary team and be prepared to support fellow wastewater team leaders as and when needed. Demonstrating dynamic leadership, technical ability, and strong problem-solving skills is crucial. You should have a performance driven mindset with a track record of building positive relationships both within your team and with key stakeholders.
We are looking for someone who can lead by example, foster high levels of employee engagement, and continuously develop their team to enhance operational effectiveness. A proven ability to deliver excellent customer service is essential.
