The Countryside Team manages over 250 hectares of land within the District of Cannock Chase for the purposes of wildlife conservation and informal public recreation including a Site of Special Scientific Interest, three Local Nature Reserves, Local Wildlife Sites, and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Habitats include woodland, heathland, wetland, and species rich grassland. The sites are grazed by our own herd of Dexter cattle and are predominantly urban or urban fringe in nature. The primary role of the team is to ensure that these sites are maintained to a high standard both for wildlife conservation purposes and public enjoyment.
We are looking for a full time Countryside Estate Worker, with experience of working with volunteers and having a good practical knowledge and experience of countryside management techniques for nature conservation. As well as being able to demonstrate managing a wide range of habitat types, the successful candidate will be competent in the use of agricultural & horticultural machinery, chainsaws, brush cutters and power tools. Experience in managing cattle would be an advantage. Heavy manual outdoor work will be required.
In addition, you should have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively face to face and by telephone, demonstrating courtesy and tact in dealing with the general public and giving clear instructions to volunteers. The ability to carry out site inspections and maintain records are also essential requirements of the role.
Candidates will ideally have an understanding of wildlife and countryside legislation and possess appropriate qualifications in the safe use of forestry equipment and pesticide application. Possession of a valid full UK driving licence is an essential requirement.
The post will include regular rostered weekends inc. Bank Holidays, mainly over the winter period to look after the cattle. Hours of work are 8:30am to 16:25pm with occasional out of hours working required.
