We investigate suspect individuals and organisations in the UK to obtain, collate, analyse and assess secret intelligence relating to these threats. Alongside our British Intelligence partners MI6 and GCHQ, we provide the UK government with the information they need to protect national security. At MI5 you’ll enjoy varied and rewarding work in a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork. The Role As a Property Specialist, you’ll provide specialist building trade services for MI5. From carpentry and joinery, to minor electrical works and plastering, you’ll undertake a range of building tasks and carry out work to a high standard, often at short notice and under tight deadlines. This is a tradesperson role unlike any other. It’s dynamic – requiring you to react quickly to change as your team provides a 24/7 service to keep the country safe. We invest in our people, and we’ll work with you to develop your career. You’ll start your journey with us undertaking in-depth training that will take up to 18 months. Following on from this, you’ll have access to additional training and career development support. This role has the potential to lead to other opportunities across MI5 and our partner organisations in the future. If you’re interested in building a varied career, then we’ll support you to make that happen. There’s no formal shift pattern for this role, but you’ll occasionally need to work out of hours, and at night. We may also ask you to work away from home for short periods of time. For additional hours worked, you’ll receive overtime payments. Overseas deployments are rare but may be required. About You To apply for this role, you’ll need to hold a City & Guilds Level 3, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent qualification in joinery/carpentry, and be able to evidence working experience that supports your skills. You’ll already have a good working knowledge of the building trade, along with a full UK driving licence. And due to the nature of this role, you’ll also be required to pass an initial fitness test, which will be repeated on a yearly basis. You’ll get 2 hours per week of paid time to help you maintain the required fitness standards. You’ll be self-motivated and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing requirements. As a great communicator, working closely with people from all types of backgrounds will come naturally to you. You’ll also be comfortable working autonomously, making decisions and working under pressure to tight timescales without compromising on quality. Though not essential, if you have knowledge of 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, test inspections and Part P, this would be beneficial. We’re also interested in knowing about your basic IT literacy and report writing skills, and any experience you have working for, or with, the Police or Military. Training and Development The initial training for the role will take at least 18 months. This is pass/fail and will determine if you are suitable for the role. The training will consist of a combination of in-house training carried out by experienced team members and external courses. Through this training you’ll gain the skills needed to apply your existing experience to our specialist ways of working. Following on from this, we’ll support your career development with further training and support in-house, as well as access to external courses.
