We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist in Oral Surgery to join our team based in Plymouth. This role will be based in our Plymouth Dental Education Facilities in Derriford and Devonport initially but will transfer to our new Dental Education Practice (DEP) in Plymouth City Centre when this opens. The DEP will provide an innovative model of care comprising urgent and stabilisation dental care, and general and specialist dentistry delivered alongside placements for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as trainees undertaking dental foundation training.
Main duties of the job
This role will involve the delivery of specialist led minor oral surgery in Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise CIC (PDSE). The role holder's main focus will be to deliver a specialist led intermediate minor oral surgery service working with local NHS colleagues and other NHS services. The role involves some undergraduate and postgraduate oral surgery teaching. This takes place across all our Dental Education Facilities, therefore some travel to Exeter and Truro will be expected.
The role holder will be expected to deliver a clinical minor oral surgery service commensurate with the NHS Commissioning guidance for minor oral surgery and in line with local NHS care pathways. The role is clinical and there is an expectation from commissioners that for each clinical session worked, 3-4 patients will be treated.

Role Summary:

1. Senior clinical staff of PDSE and academic colleagues from the Peninsula Dental School including the Clinical Leads for Exeter, Derriford, Devonport and Truro
2. Professor of Community Dentistry
3. Director of Clinical Dentistry
4. Administrative and governance staff of PDSE
5. Staff in NHS Commissioning teams
Clinical Duties:
Clinical duties will be as directed by the line manager and PDSE clinical leadership team. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the development of local NHS services as directed by the Chief Executive.
Teaching:
The appointee will contribute to undergraduate dental student teaching (to include clinical supervision) and postgraduate training. PDSE has a close working arrangement with the Dental School and there may be opportunities for flexible working arrangements to develop career progression.
Managerial:
The management responsibility of the post-holder will be via the Lead Dentist. The post holder will be expected to attend relevant meetings to discuss service, policy and procedure as directed.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:
The post holder will take an active part in department audit arrangements and work closely with the Directors of PDSE to undertake duties as deemed appropriate.
Research:
There may be opportunities to support research in the school relevant to the role and specialty.

Person Specification
Qualifications
1. Full registration with GDC.
2. On the Specialist GDC list in Oral Surgery or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion.
3. Possession of a certificate of accreditation or eligibility for a CCT in oral surgery or equivalent.
4. Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) or membership of Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS/MJDF) or equivalent.
5. Intercollegiate specialty fellowship (ISFE), exit examination in Oral Surgery or equivalent.
Experience
1. Successful completion of an SAC approved training programme in Oral Surgery or equivalent.
2. Diploma in Dental sedation, SAAD training in conscious sedation or equivalent.
3. Aptitude for the surgical management of joint cases with orthodontics and OMFS.
4. Experience of interdisciplinary team working.
