You will be responsible for ensuring that products and services are safe, accurately described, and comply with the relevant laws and regulations. Some of the duties of a trading standards officer are:
1. Visiting trading premises, such as shops, pubs, factories, and markets, to carry out routine checks or to investigate complaints.
2. Taking samples for laboratory analysis, checking labels, weights, measures, and prices.
3. Investigating suspected offences, sometimes undercover and with the police or other agencies.
4. Presenting evidence at court in criminal proceedings.
5. Offering business advice to help traders comply with legislation.
6. Educating consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities.
7. Keeping up to date with new legislation, cases, and guidance procedures.
Trading standards officers need to have excellent communication skills, analytical skills, observation skills, and resilience. They also need to be able to work independently and as part of a team. They may face challenging situations and deal with hostile traders or customers. They may also have to work evenings or weekends to attend events or appointments.
