We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team as a less than full-time (7.5 PA) Locum Consultant in Community Paediatrics. This is a new clinical post designed to support the continuing development of our clinical service. You will join a large team of consultants in paediatric medicine, which includes several consultant colleagues in Community Paediatrics.
The department of paediatric medicine provides a comprehensive acute, general, and community paediatric service to the children and young people of Newcastle upon Tyne and its surrounding area. You must hold MRCPCH or equivalent. A passion for Community and General Paediatrics with substantial experience is essential.
Main Duties of the Job
This is a new, less than full-time post (7.5 PA). Applications are invited from candidates with training and a passion for Community Paediatrics. We are looking for a candidate to complement the current needs of the Community Paediatric Department. These include child development assessments of children with broad developmental disorders, specifically those with social communication disorders. The candidate will be involved in autism assessments and will form part of the autism team. Other duties will include child protection medical assessments and reviewing children who attend a specialist school, including those with complex neurodisabilities. There are other opportunities within the department, including work with the child in care team.

Job Responsibilities
The proposed timetable for the successful applicant would include the following duties:
Community Paediatrics:
* One locality-based Community clinic per week, seeing new and review patients with developmental concerns and possible Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
* One clinic a week during term time in either the junior or senior specialist school in Newcastle, managing children with learning disabilities and associated co-morbidities.
* Opportunity to perform Children in Care Initial Health Assessment (IHA) Clinics.
* Participate in the Consultant on-call Child protection rota, covering referrals on one designated afternoon a week.
Clinical:
* Provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding paediatric problems.
* Work closely with nursing and other staff to develop systems of care for children with specific disorders.
* Undergo Continued Medical Education (CME) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
* Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review.
Managerial:
* Participate in Clinical Governance and contribute to multidisciplinary quality improvement, audit, and risk management activities.
* Assist the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director in the timely investigation of complaints.
* Contribute to the organization and running of paediatric services within the Trust.
Administrative:
* Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and the running of the Children’s Services Directorate.
* Become involved with the financial management of the paediatric departmental budget.
Research:
* Participate in research activities that complement the service provided.
Teaching:
* Participate in the teaching of undergraduate medical students and other health care professionals.
* Active involvement in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees in the department.
Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills:
* Primary Medical Qualification
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
* MRCPCH or equivalent
* Higher Degree
* Special skills training in the specialty
* CCT in CCH
Clinical Experience:
* Wide experience in Community Paediatrics and Acute General Paediatrics.
* Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
* Experience in assessing children with developmental disorders and autistic spectrum disorder.
* Experience of child protection and multi-agency working.
Management and Administration Experience:
* Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
* Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
* Understanding of Clinical Governance.
* Leadership and training experience.
Teaching:
* Experience of supervising junior medical staff and participation in teaching.
* Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
Research:
* Evidence of involvement in research methodology and publication of findings.
Audit:
* Evidence of participation in audit and changes in practice as a result.
Personal Attributes:
* Alignment with the Trust's values and a flexible approach to service delivery.
* Commitment to personal/unit CPD.
* Ability to work the on-call rota.

Salary: £105,504 to £139,882 per annum pro rata
