The school Ipswich School has been listed as one of the top 100 schools in the country and is certainly one of the foremost independent schools in East Anglia. We were established prior to 1399, although we moved to our present site in 1852. We are a co-educational school with just over 1000 pupils aged between 3 months and 18 years. The school comprises a Senior School with over 820 pupils aged from 11 to 18 (around 80 of whom board with us during term time), and a Prep School with over 200 pupils aged from 5 to 11 years. The school operates a 5-day week, with representative sports played during the week and on Saturdays. Boarding at Ipswich School Westwood is an attractive Victorian mansion set in wooded grounds on Constitution Hill, just a few minutes’ walk from the main school site. Anglesea Heights Girls’ Boarding House is a modern attractive space, with ensuite facilities providing an experience similar to a university hall of residence. All of our Boarders benefit from a friendly, home-from-home experience. We currently offer Boarding for boys and girls in Year 9 – Year 13, and we will be welcoming applications for Year 7 and 8 Boarders to start with us in the academic year beginning in September 2025. Due to high demand in recent years, these year groups will join our expanding Boarding community. The Post We are looking for someone to join our team of boarding house cleaners. You will work on the Westwood site but may from time to time be asked to work at Anglesea Heights, or other school sites as required. You will be working part-time to ensure our boarding accommodation is kept clean and tidy and welcoming for pupils, parents and visitors. Accountable to You will be responsible on a day-to-day basis to the Resident House Parent and Housekeeper/Assistant House Parent when they are on duty. All boarding staff are ultimately responsible to the Head of Boarding. Relationships You will work under the direction of the Head of Boarding, Housekeeper or Assistant House Parent on duty, to ensure the Boarding House is cleaned and maintained to a high standard. Duties include general cleaning of bedrooms, bathrooms and communal areas. You will also assist with laundry and bed making/changing. You will have an important role to play in making the Boarding House a home-from-home for our boarding pupils. You will be encouraged to report any concerns relating to individual pupils, or the accommodation, to the Housekeeper, Houseparent or Head of Boarding and to maintain good relationships with all members of the Boarding House team and pupils. Principal Responsibilities The following will give you a taste of the tasks and duties involved, you will: maintain all areas of the boarding accommodation to a high standard of cleanliness, helping to prioritise work as appropriate assist in the delivery, collection and sorting of laundry to and from the laundry observe any damage or vandalism, which should be reported to the Head of Boarding or the House Parent/Housekeeper on duty. You will also be expected to report any concerns about ‘banned’ items and substances you may see/find when cleaning pupils’ rooms ensure cleaning materials are used efficiently and effectively and that stocks are maintained by advising the Housekeeper when stocks are running low assist with the making of beds at the beginning of each term as directed by the House Parent/Housekeeper or Head of Boarding ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work regulations. This list of duties is not exhaustive, and maybe added to or changed from time to time. Health and Safety You will be required to ensure the safety of yourself and others in the work environment. To this end protective clothing provided by the school must be worn. Any concerns relating to Health and Safety should be reported in the first instance to the House Parent. Personal Specification You will need to have a cheerful disposition and be well organised, efficient and reliable. The position requires flexibility and the ability to work effectively as part of a small team in our boarding community. Excellent communication skills and the ability to be empathetic, caring and welcoming to pupils, visitors and staff alike are essential skills for this post. Previous cleaning experience would be desirable. Additional Hours There may be the opportunity to work additional hours during the school’s holiday periods when residential holiday lettings and events are taking place at Westwood House and/or Anglesea Heights. This opportunity can be discussed further at interview with shortlisted candidates. These hours, if worked, will be paid in addition to the contracted hours detailed. Salary and Benefits the salary, for the contracted hours of work outlined above, will be £9,442 per annum, and this includes paid holiday as required by the Working Time Regulations.
