About the role
Job Title: Pre-construction Manager
Location: Euro Central / Motherwell / Central Belt Scotland
Project Type: Energy Infrastructure - (Substation Build)
Company: Balfour Beatty Group
About Us:
Balfour Beatty is a leading international infrastructure and construction group. We finance, develop, build, and maintain innovative and efficient projects that underpin daily life, supports communities, and enables economic growth. Our unparalleled expertise and resources ensure that we deliver high-quality projects safely, on time, and within budget.
Now is a great time to join us. As a leading international construction group with a healthy pipeline of work, we're growing our teams. Shape a career to be proud of as part of an award-winning team.
We're looking for a dynamic Pre-construction Manager based in Scotland's Central Belt.
This is a pivotal role, interfacing across supply chain partners, designers, and internal teams to deliver successful pre-construction outcomes on one of Scotland's most high-profile energy infrastructure schemes.
You'll be the linchpin in connecting strategic planning with on-site delivery readiness - ensuring we go to site with a clear vision, defined scope, and confident programme. Working alongside colleagues across the Energy workstream, you'll help share best practice across a series of concurrent transmission projects.
What you'll be doing
As a Pre-construction Manager you will have the following accountabilities:
1. Lead From the Front: Own the pre-construction phase for the substation build, acting as the primary point of contact for clients and key partners.
2. Collaborate Across the Board: Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to align designs, scope, and programme from feasibility to mobilisation.
3. Drive Excellence: Champion Balfour Beatty's standards in safety, innovation, and technical delivery-particularly CDM 2015 and Health by Design.
4. Shape the Project: Ensure designs are efficient, constructible, and set the project up for success before breaking ground.
5. Upskill and Mentor: Lead a talented team, developing skills and promoting learning across the pre-construction discipline.
6. Interface & Integrate: Seamlessly interface with internal business units and specialist partners across the energy sector.
7. Report & Influence: Produce insightful reports and communicate clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
8. Embrace Innovation: Introduce emerging digital tools, including BIM Level 2, 3D design, CGI modelling, and defect avoidance techniques.
Who we're looking for
What You Need
1. A strong technical background in civil or structural engineering, ideally within power, utilities, or infrastructure.
2. Proven experience leading complex pre-construction stages from feasibility through to start on site.
3. Excellent stakeholder management and the confidence to influence across a wide range of partners.
4. A collaborative mindset - you thrive in a team that values knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
5. Familiarity with industry standards and governance, including gated lifecycle processes.
6. A proactive, solutions-focused approach with a passion for getting things right before construction starts.
Why Join Us?
1. Be part of a major energy infrastructure investment that's shaping the UK's low-carbon future.
2. Work on challenging, high-profile projects with the support of a skilled, multi-disciplinary team.
3. Join a culture of learning, improvement, and excellence-where your voice makes a difference.
4. Enjoy a competitive salary, development opportunities, and a flexible, inclusive working environment.
