Lead a team and co-ordinate the theatre in the absence of the Clinical Speciality Manager and reinforce the Trust values and standards leading to the delivery of clinically excellent care.
Ensure the planning and delivery of care is aligned to professional values of care, compassion and respect, act as a change agent, developing clinically effective practice through the effective utilisation and integration of evidence-based practice.
Support the Clinical Speciality Manager in ensuring a culture of protecting patients from harm and deprivation of basic rights ensuring a safe and effective service with continuous quality improvement.
Promote a clean and safe environment for staff, patients, and visitors by ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and protocols including health and safety, healthcare associated infection prevention, clinical governance, including risk management and critical incident reporting and root cause analysis.
Ensure a high standard of care and record keeping in accordance with Nursing
and Midwifery Council, Health Care Professions Council, national legislationand local standards.
Assess the risks involved in the care of patients and ensure utilisation of practices and protocols to minimise those risks, including safe use of medical devices. To monitor the standards of care and with the support of the Clinical Speciality Manager take appropriate actions when standards fall below expected levels.
Report incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately and with the support of the Clinical Speciality Manager take effective action to minimize future risk. Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based protocols, standards, policies, and clinical guidelines.
Critically appraise and synthesise the outcomes of relevant research, evaluations and audits and apply information when seeking to improve practice Co-ordinate the planning of care to patients paying due attention to staffing levels, skill mix, competence, experience, and training within the team.

Always ensure the care provided to patients is delivered in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner and respecting the different cultural background of colleagues, clients, visitors and patients.
Ensure good communication links and co-operation exists between staff in the area and other health professionals, other disciplines and departments thereby ensuring a seamless service for patients and their families.
Undertake / participate in nursing research appropriate to the speciality.
Contribute to the planning of duty rota’s and organise annual leave in such away as to ensure continuity of care and safety for patients and staff.
Ensure the equipment used or stored within the department is in good working order, liaising with appropriate agencies as necessary.
Ensure adequate and economical levels of stock items are maintained.
Maintain and improve knowledge and expertise in current developments and future trends in relation to perioperative theatre practice and management.
Participate in the development of new innovative patient care techniques.
Ensure an effective and efficient patient’s journey by planning and coordinating the episode of care including the smooth transition to other settings, promoting safe and effective transfer and
optimising communication with members of the multi-disciplinary team as required.
Ensure a culture of continuous quality improvement using audit, patient feedback and reflection on practice by self and other members of the team. In the absence of the Clinical Speciality Manager co-ordinate interventions, advise on clinical decisions and monitor the quality of patient care provided through using expert clinical knowledge relevant to own field of practice, underpinned by theory and experience. Act as the advocate for the patient ensuring safe and harm-free care is always uppermost in every decision.
Within a multi-disciplinary team environment, support the development of a culture of person-centred care.
Identify opportunities to develop care and services by supporting the Clinical Speciality Manager in ensuring that there are effective systems in place to ascertain patient experience / feedback and ensure complaints are managed in line with organisational policy.

In the absence of the Clinical Specialty Manager manage the team, ensuring compliance by self and others with professional standards, legislation, national and organisational policies.
