The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for construction projects including new builds and refurbishments across a number of sectors – Residential, Education, Commercial, Industrial and more.
The Estimator will be responsible for evaluating project plans, blueprints, and specifications to determine the scope of work and project requirements. The estimator also gathers and reviews pricing data for materials, labour, and equipment costs, while working closely with project managers and contractors to ensure the project remains within budget.
Key Responsibilities:
* Cost Estimation:
* Analyse blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
* Prepare detailed estimates for all construction project phases, including site preparation, foundation, building structure, finishing work, and other specialty items.
* Assess costs associated with procurement of construction materials, labour, and equipment.
* Bid Preparation and Submission:
* Develop and prepare comprehensive proposals for clients, including cost breakdowns and schedules.
* Participate in the preparation and submission of bids for various types of construction projects (residential, commercial, etc.).
* Procurement and Vendor Relations:
* Collaborate with suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors to obtain pricing and availability for required materials.
* Negotiate pricing and terms with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitive bids.
* Project Budgeting and Tracking:
* Work closely with project managers to develop project budgets and monitor ongoing costs during construction.
* Identify cost overruns and work on corrective actions to stay within budget.
* Risk Analysis:
* Conduct risk assessments to identify potential cost variations, delays, and other financial risks to the project.
* Advise management on ways to minimize project risks and cost increases.
* Reporting and Documentation:
* Maintain accurate records of estimates, including all revisions, adjustments, and approvals.
* Prepare and present reports detailing cost variances, forecasting, and budget analysis.
* Collaboration and Communication:
* Coordinate with architects, engineers, and project managers to ensure clarity of project scope and cost-related issues.
* Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project progress meetings as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred) or equivalent work experience.
* Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction estimating or a related field.
* Technical Skills:
* Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., ProEst, Buildertrend, Sage Estimating, etc.).
* Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and costs.
* Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and contracts.
* Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams.
* Attention to Detail: Strong analytical and mathematical skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
* Project Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple estimates and projects simultaneously.
Desired Qualifications:
* Certification as a Professional Estimator (e.g., AACE, ASPE, or similar) is a plus.
* Experience in specific sectors (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial) is an advantage.
