University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust provide emergency services at our purpose-built Minor Injuries Unit based at UHCW and also at our Urgent Treatment Centre based at St Cross Hospital in Rugby and City of Coventry Health Centre. All sites have dedicated facilities and allocated staff to provide care 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The Emergency Care Practitioner within the Minor Injuries Unit/Urgent Treatment Centre will use specialist knowledge and skills to independently provide healthcare to a select group of patients with minor illnesses or injuries. The nurse practitioner is a clinical expert and accountable for the total episode of care of the patient including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and/or referral and discharge. The nurse practitioner will undertake the role in accordance with the ED ENP Scope of Practice Framework and is supported by other members of the multidisciplinary team.
We are looking to recruit senior experienced Emergency Practitioners who are able to demonstrate that they can see, treat and independently discharge both adult and child patients from our Minor Injuries Unit. As a senior member of the team, you will be involved in the clinical and managerial aspects of caring for Emergency patients attending our busy department.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Co-ordinate the care of the UTC/MIU patients throughout the care pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients.
2. Demonstrate specialist skills, knowledge, and expertise in the management of minor injury and minor illness conditions in line with Scope of Practice.
3. Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct and contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
4. Using advanced history taking skills, obtain a patient history in a systematic manner including pertinent physical, social, emotional, psychological, or environmental factors.
5. Utilise advanced physical assessment skills, undertaking physical examinations as appropriate, using techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion, including the safe use of diagnostic equipment as appropriate.
6. Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and radiology investigations to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings on history and physical examination and relate these findings to possible diagnosis.
7. Make clinical decisions using analytical and judgmental skills to reach a diagnosis and effectively communicate the information regarding these decisions, care pathways, and policy to the patients/carers and multi-professional team.
8. Develop and implement a plan of healthcare management which will include any necessary treatment and appropriate referral for further evaluation or follow-up care to any member of the multidisciplinary team. Take clinical responsibility for the diagnosis, management, and discharge/referral/transfer of the patient and offer health promotion strategies where appropriate.
9. Utilise and ensure others utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce, and resource data. Responsible for documenting all clinical notes both computerised and paper-based.
10. Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary and multi-professional teams to develop and promote the unique contribution to patient care provided by Emergency Practitioners.
11. Provide clinical teaching and develop the knowledge and skills of junior staff in the Emergency Practitioner team while remaining up to date with clinical and professional developments and own learning. Share knowledge and expertise related to clinical and professional practice within and outside the organisation.
12. Support the resuscitation and stabilisation of adults and children/young people applying either ILS/PILS/EPALS skills and knowledge.
13. Consider any safeguarding concerns: adult and child and comprehensively act upon them, liaising with colleagues and senior teams and the named nurse for adult/children safeguarding as necessary.
