Development Engineer - Precision Engineering

Salary: £45,000 per annum
My clients based near the borders of Suffolk, Cambridgeshire & Essex are looking for a Development Engineer - Precision Engineering / Fibre Optics. This role is commutable from Cambridge, Saffron Walden, Royston, Dunmow, Braintree, Haverhill, Newmarket, Bury St. Edmunds.
This organisation designs & manufactures an extensive range of optical fibre-based sub-systems with superior hermeticity & optical termination, as well as high efficiency coupling of lasers, fibres & detectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of around a dozen engineers & technicians for the delivery of multi-disciplined engineering projects to target in a fast-paced mid-size company.
The role will involve product development, project management, staff management, and hands-on engineering. A collaborative attitude and interpersonal skills are important. For the right candidate, there will be a career opportunity to progress quickly to a senior engineering management position.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
1. Lead engineering activities related to design, development, test, and process engineering.
2. Manage multiple high priority engineering projects with on-time and on-budget delivery.
3. Supervision of a group of junior engineers and technicians.
4. Perform hands-on development activities, typically up to 50% of your time.
5. Implement, monitor, and co-develop the technology roadmap - providing fiber optic solutions for multiple end markets.
6. Work closely with manufacturing, procurement, and sales for new product delivery.
Knowledge/Experience/Skills Required:
Essential:
1. Degree in Science or Engineering discipline (or other qualification with equivalent experience).
2. Substantial engineering experience, especially in optics, materials, and mechanical design.
3. Proven lead engineering and/or management experience.
4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, easy-going.
5. Project & people management skills - ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
6. Experience in mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, optical engineering or a similar high technology area.
Desirable:
1. Experience with fibre optic products development, manufacturing and testing.
2. Experience of reliability testing & quality control.
3. Experience of technology transfer.
Your current job title may be Lead Engineer, Chief Engineer, Principal Engineer, Senior Engineer, Engineering Manager, Project Manager, R&D Manager, Development Manager or similar.
Basic salary: up to £55k for the right candidate, plus a range of benefits.
