Main Duties:
Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of patients before, during, and after chemotherapy treatments, including evaluating overall health, medical history, and potential side effects.
Treatment Administration: Administer chemotherapy drugs and other medications as prescribed, ensuring correct dosages and adherence to safety protocols.
Monitoring and Management: Monitor patients for adverse reactions and side effects during and after chemotherapy sessions. Implement appropriate interventions and manage any complications that arise.
Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about chemotherapy treatments, potential side effects, and self-care practices to manage symptoms and enhance comfort.
Care Coordination: Collaborate with oncologists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to plan and coordinate patient care, ensuring a comprehensive and integrated approach to treatment.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of treatment plans, patient responses, and any incidents or complications. Document changes in patient status and treatment outcomes.
Supportive Care: Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and families, addressing concerns and offering guidance throughout the treatment process.
Pre-Treatment Preparation: Prepare and set up chemotherapy medications, including the use of protective equipment and adherence to safety standards to prevent contamination.
Post-Treatment Care: Oversee post-treatment care, including monitoring for delayed side effects, managing symptoms, and scheduling follow-up appointments.
Safety Protocols: Adhere to strict safety and infection control protocols to protect patients and staff from potential hazards associated with chemotherapy drugs.
Patient Advocacy: Advocate for patients' needs and preferences, ensuring their voices are heard in the treatment process and that their comfort and well-being are prioritized.
Team Collaboration: Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, participating in case discussions, treatment planning meetings, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
Emergency Response: Respond promptly and effectively to any emergencies or critical situations related to chemotherapy treatment, including managing allergic reactions or severe side effects.
Requirements of the Chemotherapy Nurse:
Valid and current RN registration is essential.
Completion of a specialised chemotherapy or oncology nursing certification programme is required.
Prior experience in oncology or chemotherapy administration is highly desirable.
Experience in a clinical setting, particularly in administering intravenous medications and managing patient care, is essential.
Expertise in administering chemotherapy, managing intravenous lines, and safely handling cytotoxic drugs.
In-depth knowledge of chemotherapy medications, protocols, and their potential side effects.
