Job Title: Waste Supervisor Starting Salary: £40,043 progressing to £43,763 Hours: 40.0 Location: Hertfordshire Contract Type: Permanent Directorate: Growth & Environment About the team As part of the Waste Management Unit, fulfilling the statutory duties of a waste disposal authority, the Recycling Centre service in Hertfordshire receives c1.5million visitors each year and handles c80,000 tonnes of household waste across a network of 16 Recycling Centres. About the role As an experienced leader in managing and motivating remote teams to achieve exceptional results and high levels of customer service, you will oversee Recycling Centres in accordance with Health and Safety, Waste industry (EA), and other relevant legislations. Working within a small team dedicated to the Recycling Centre service, you will continuously improve this essential service for the residents of Hertfordshire. In this role, you will ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, including Environmental and Health & Safety requirements, while promoting continuous improvement in customer service, recycling performance, waste reduction, and reuse initiatives. You will travel around the county, providing visible leadership to remote teams and conducting frequent inspections related to service provision and compliance. Your responsibilities will include engaging with members of the public in person, over the phone, and through written communications, investigating accidents, incidents, complaints, and customer inquiries to provide thorough and reasoned responses and resolutions. Part of this role includes challenging service users who may be fraudulently accessing free public services at the expense of taxpayers and make informed, evidence-based decisions regarding service provision on weekends on behalf of senior management. Using initiative and creativity, you will solve complex problems within the framework of applicable legislation and council policy. Additionally, you will be responsible for the effective maintenance of infrastructure, plant, and machinery at recycling centres, ensuring clear and effective communication with contractors to maintain continuous service delivery. You will also identify needs and place orders for goods and services related to the service, managing goods receipting for invoice payment approval. About you As someone engaged in ensuring a compliant and positive working environment across a diverse and dispersed front line team everyday will present different challenges. Working closely with different members of the Recycling Centre and Reuse Team, the Waste Management Unit and colleagues from across HCC you will have the opportunity to help deliver and shape a service that many residents rely upon as well as helping the Council protect the environment for future generations. Essential criteria: Leadership and management skills. Certificate of Technical Competence. Waste management experience. Experience in managing Health and Safety, with a relevant qualification. Proven ability to improve services through managing a team of staff. Ability to communicate policy and legislative restrictions clearly to the public, acknowledging the diversity of Hertfordshire residents. Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage operations similar to a Recycling Centre. Daily access to a vehicle and the ability to drive around the county as required.
