Hamish is very much at the heart of his loving and supportive family. His little sister is everything to him, most of the time Hamish is utterly charming and engaging, he has has a real twinkle in his eyes. His Waking Night Carer will gain instant points if they are able to pick up ‘Hamish’s world view’ ie, being in on his jokes and tricks. He loves to make people jump and laugh Hamish enjoys being read to, listening to music, talking about his favourite things/ films and doing fun things with his carers, either in his lovely garden (where he can reach high speeds in his electric wheelchair), or going out and about locally. Hamish has Cerebral Palsy which affects all 4 limbs but predominantly so on his right side. He can feed himself with gentle prompting and requires help with dressing and personal care. He has some challenges with communication which his therapy team are supporting him with so showing patience and encouragement when he is talking is paramount. Hamish has epilepsy; more detailed information regarding this is available upon application. Overview of role: Shift begins at 8.15 pm when Hamish goes through to his room to get ready for bed; Hamish has a fantastic, fully adapted playroom, bedroom and bathroom. Hamish struggles getting into a deep sleep, so it is during these first few hours of rest when gentle reassurance is given to help him feel comfortable and secure. Ensuring he has this will enable him to gently nod off to sleep and of course in the long run be important for his overall health and well-being. His Waking Night Carer sits beside him (comfy chair is provided) until around 10/10.30 pm. Once he is asleep, Hamish will be monitored from the office which is situated close to Hamish’s room. Night times can be quiet, so the Waking Night Carer is welcome to read/study, however it is imperative that you stay alert to Hamish stirring (he will need to be quietly guided back to sleep before he fully wakes up, as he is very unlikely to go back asleep). Hamish typically wakes around 6.00am or 6.30am during the week and a little later during weekends. During the week, his mum or dad will be the second pair of hands to get him up and ready for school. Who this job would suit: The Waking Night Carer will be understanding and engaging, as this will be key to building a trustworthy connection with Hamish. Bringing not only experience as a waking night support worker but also a very jolly disposition is just as important. What’s great about this job: Expect excellent onboarding, ongoing supervision and training, plus wonderful support from this incredibly warm and welcoming family.
