Base salary: £47,450pa to c.£59,300pa depending on skills and experience. In addition, we offer a flexible benefits fund of 20% which is paid on top of the base salary and is fully pensionable, as well as a range of competitive benefits - check them out in the Benefits section on our website.

As a Senior Rolling Stock Engineer at HS2, you’ll manage and deliver the engineering elements of the high-speed passenger train fleet delivery programme, including integration of trains into the wider railway system, in order to ensure that quality rolling stock is delivered on time through an efficient, robust process, contributing to the success of the overall HS2 project.
About the role:
* Support finalisation of initial rolling stock tender evaluation and contract, including negotiations with Tenderers;
* Ensure that appointed rolling stock contractor delivers rolling stock to the technical aspects of the contract;
* Develop and validate the requirements for future rolling stock;
* Engage with external stakeholders (including client, train operator, Network Rail, approval bodies, rail user groups) throughout the procurement and delivery of the fleet to ensure stakeholder needs are understood and managed to successful conclusion;
* Develop the rolling stock maintenance, depot, and stabling strategy and requirements;
* Provide overall programme assurance for the rolling stock, following a systems engineering approach as appropriate to a major, complex engineering programme;
* Provide, from a rolling stock perspective, strategic direction within the business to ensure successful programme outcomes and integration of the rolling stock with the wider system/programme;
* Develop and contribute to development of the system strategies and policies which will deliver the railway capability while mitigating the environmental impacts, within the programme and budget;
* Provide leadership of specialist and consultancy resource;
* Commission and oversee the delivery of studies to enable robust system design decision making;

* Systems Engineering and Requirements:
* Able to develop and manage rigorous, traceable technical requirements to facilitate successful execution of engineering contracts.
* Able to use best practice systems engineering principles and tools to facilitate the integration of the railway system and management of its interfaces.
* Communication Skills: able to communicate complex issues to a broad and diverse audience in a range of formats including reports, briefings, and presentations.
* Capacity to learn and develop knowledge of a wide range of rail systems, engineering processes, tools, and railway operational principles.
* Influencing and negotiation skills: able to develop relationships with stakeholders and negotiate complex agreements.
* Planning and management skills: for development and delivery of programmes requiring the contribution of multiple individuals, inputs, and any other resources.
* Skills for the commissioning of work packages: able to prepare clear remits for the specification governance of external work.
Knowledge:
* Degree-qualified in relevant engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, electrical, software); ideally a chartered engineer or similar level of experience.
* Technical knowledge of the breadth of train design including some knowledge of:
* Operational functionality, train control, and software.
* Overall vehicle performance – e.g. journey time modelling, acoustic performance.
* Compatibility with infrastructure – e.g. EMC, gauging.
* Interior design and human factors.
* Vehicle maintenance and servicing.
* Understanding of the rolling stock procurement, design, construction, and introduction life-cycle.
* Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory approvals processes.
Type of experience:
* Experience of developing and managing requirements, interfaces, and systems integration in a railway context.
* Experience of working on delivery of a rolling stock project as customer or supplier.
* Experience of effective working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
