About the role
Balfour Beatty is looking for an experienced Deputy Group Treasurer (DGT) to join our high-performing Treasury team.
As the Deputy Group Treasurer, you will be a high impact subject matter expert. You will play a crucial role in managing and optimising our company's financial resources working closely with the Group Treasurer and collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop and implement effective treasury strategies for efficient cash and risk solutions.
Treasury is a centralised group function responsible for the management of all treasury activities undertaken by the Group, including funding, liquidity, interest rate risk management and foreign exchange management.
This role requires a strong understanding of financial markets, risk management, liquidity management and developing market trends. You will contribute to the overall financial health of the organisation by ensuring efficient cash flow management, mitigating financial risks, and supporting strategic decision-making.
The Deputy Group Treasurer is the designated deputy to the Group Treasurer and will, therefore, be required to lead the function and support Balfour Beatty’s Group CFO, CEO and Executive Management team as necessary. Accordingly, the Deputy Group Treasurer must be able to lead and influence as a senior finance expert in the organisation.
Externally, the DGT is also responsible for developing strong relationships with Banks and other specialist service providers, commanding respect with this audience.
What you'll be doing
This is a high impact role; delivery directly impacts Balfour Beatty Group’s ability to maintain solvency and operations. The DGT is a technical expert accountable for a fast-moving, complex, and multifaceted specialist area in respect of the specific financial risks and rewards managed by the Treasury function including:
Cash Management:
* Monitors and manages the company's cash flow (c.£800m) and liquidity (c£600m debt), ensuring adequate funds are available for day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.
* Optimises cash inflows and outflows, cash pooling, forecasting, and liquidity planning.
Risk Management:
* Identifies and mitigates financial risks, including interest rate, foreign exchange, commodity, and credit risks. Implements risk management strategies, including hedging and derivatives, to maintain financial stability.
Capital Structure and Funding:
* Advises BB’s Group CFO on Balfour Beatty Group’s capital structure, including the appropriate mix of debt and equity financing.
* Plays the lead role in identifying possible funding solutions to meet the strategic needs of the Group.
Investment Management:
* Responsible for informed strategic investment of Balfour Beatty Group’s excess cash of c.£800m. Ensures liquidity and security of funds while generating an optimal return for Balfour Beatty Group. In current market conditions, the DGT generates c. £25m pa in interest income from investments.
Reporting & Regulatory Compliance:
* Oversees the preparation of financial reports, presentations, and analysis for senior management and the plc Board of Directors.
* Ensures Balfour Beatty is compliant with financial regulations and reporting requirements, both at national and international levels.
Treasury Technology:
* Treasury relies heavily on advanced financial technology systems for cash management, risk assessment, investment analysis, and reporting. Implementing and integrating these complex systems, the DGT must demonstrate technological expertise and continuous monitoring.
Global Operations:
* Balfour Beatty operates internationally. In collaboration with colleagues across Balfour Beatty’s operations, the DGT must navigate the complexities of managing cash and financial activities across multiple countries with different regulatory environments, currencies, and banking systems.
Relationship Management:
* Build and maintain strong relationships with various external stakeholders, including banks, financial institutions and rating agencies.
* The DGT must demonstrate credibility and gravitas in representing Balfour Beatty at a senior level.
Economic and Market Volatility:
* Managing the company's financial health during periods of economic volatility, interest rate fluctuations, and other market uncertainties.
Strategic Financial Planning:
* Contribute to the company's overall financial strategy and decision-making. The function participates in strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, capital budgeting, and other high-level financial initiatives that impact the company's long-term success.
Innovation:
* Delivers continuous evaluation and improvement to BB Group treasury processes and systems. The DGT must understand how financial markets are evolving and develop appropriate risk management solutions around emerging areas such as the use of AI.
Who we're looking for
* Experience in a leadership position in a FTSE250 or equivalent organisation.
* Proven experience in treasury management, preferably in a multinational corporation or within a financial institution.
* Can demonstrate hands-on experience in delivery of significant treasury transactions such as debt refinancing, TMS projects and cash management solutions.
* Strong knowledge of financial markets, banking products, and treasury operations.
* Proficiency in cash management techniques, cash forecasting, and liquidity planning.
* Familiarity with financial risk management strategies, including foreign exchange hedging and interest rate risk mitigation.
* Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make informed decisions.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
* Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and precision in financial analysis and reporting.
* Proficiency in using treasury management systems and financial software.
* Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
* Professional certification such as Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) qualification is desirable.
