Lead Test & Development Engineer – Electrified Powertrain Location: Birmingham Salary: Competitive, based on experience Contract: Permanent About the Role An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Lead Test & Development Engineer to take charge of testing and development activities for electrified powertrain systems in the automotive sector. This role will focus on E-machines, driveline, dedicated hybrid engines, and powertrain control units, working across both test beds and in-vehicle applications. This position is ideal for a highly skilled engineer with a strong background in powertrain development, instrumentation, data acquisition, and vehicle attribute engineering. Key Responsibilities Lead test and development work for electrified powertrain systems, including motors, battery systems, and hybrid components. Oversee powertrain performance testing, focusing on efficiency, drivability, and durability. Plan, design, and execute test programs on powertrain rigs or dyno setups. Analyse and validate data, ensuring accuracy and reliability. Develop and enhance test facilities to support advanced electrified powertrain development. Collaborate closely with Design, CAE, Calibration, and Integration teams to define and optimise powertrain designs. Provide technical leadership and support for project management activities. Mentor and train junior engineers, sharing expertise on best practices. Key Requirements Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or a related discipline); a higher-level degree is advantageous. Proven automotive industry experience, specifically in electrified powertrain development. Strong expertise in E-machines, driveline, engine, and hybrid systems. Deep knowledge of vehicle attribute engineering and powertrain target setting. Hands-on experience with instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition systems. Familiarity with automotive calibration and data acquisition tools (ETAS INCA/MDA preferred). Previous experience in AVL or similar powertrain test rigs is highly desirable. Strong project management and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyse and present technical data effectively. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
