Job Title: Residential Support Worker
Responsible to: Manager/Nominated Individual
Key Internal Contacts: Other staff within the Support team
Key External Contacts: Advocates, Social workers, IRO’s, Placing Authorities and Specialist service professionals.
Working Hours: The provision operates on a 24/7 basis, including weekends and bank holidays. The rota is a 4 week rolling rota, with each staff member guaranteed a full weekend off every other week. Shifts are from 9am-11pm with sleep in requirements.
There may be the option to pick up additional hours/ shifts.
Job Purpose
You will work as part of a Team to provide, flexible, creative, outcome focused support and guidance to vulnerable young people aged 16 – 18, in order to enable them to prepare for independent living.
Person Specification
Residential Support Worker (experience, skills, qualities & qualifications required for the role at Rose House)
1. 2 Years Experience of work within a young persons residential setting in the UK.
2. Experience of working shift patterns.
3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
4. Effective communication skills, verbal and written.
5. Ability to record information accurately.
6. Good organisational skills.
7. Commitment to working positively with families and others.
8. Flexibility and willingness to work a shift system including weekends.
9. Ability to deal with complex and challenging behaviour.
10. A genuine regard and respect for young people.
11. Ability to demonstrate empathy.
12. Basic IT skills.
13. Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) NVQ Level 3 OR Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.
14. Undertake relevant induction training on commencement.
15. Driving licence.
Key Task Areas and Responsibilities
1. To actively safeguard and promote the welfare of the young people.
2. To report immediately any unsafe practices and conditions.
3. Actively promote structure, boundaries and routines within a safe and supportive environment.
4. Provide a positive role model for the young people, presenting oneself in a highly professional manner.
5. As required work with young people on intervention strategies to promote pro-social behaviour.
6. To contribute to the development of appropriate relationships with and between all staff, young people, families and education, employment, health and therapy.
7. To establish relationships and links within the community to assist the young person and their family.
8. To help our young people to Organise and participate in appropriate activities.
9. Domestic duties.
10. Supporting our young people in Cooking and shopping.
11. Transporting our young people to essential appointments and activities and Support the young people to use public transport.
12. Support and supervise the young people in the implementation of an individual programmes of life skills, key skills and independence skills and leisure in their Home and the community.
13. Support and supervise our young people within the Home in accordance with their personal/pathway/placement plans.
14. Make accurate and appropriate entries in the young persons records, diaries and reports as necessary in accordance with Rose Houses policies, procedures and practices.
15. Support and enable our young people to maintain a high level of personal hygiene.
16. Work with and manage challenging behaviour, enabling the young people to develop from needing external control to develop their self-control.
17. Support our young people to organise and participate in appropriate activities and enable the young people to take part in a wide variety of activities.
18. Safeguard all our young people within the Home and ensure their safety and wellbeing.
19. Support with medication in accordance with Rose Houses policies and procedures (where applicable).
20. Check the daily diary and help our young people organise their appointments for that day as required.
21. Ensure that all the relevant personal/pathway/placement plans for the young people are in place, accurate and up to date.
22. Work positively and effectively with relatives, advocates and the team around the young person.
23. Support Young people with completing and returning homework.
24. Communicate effectively with education staff to ensure a consistent approach and to provide a daily link between School/ college and Home.
25. Exercise vigilance in respect of Health and Safety and promptly report all hazards and/or remedying them.
26. Undertake all duties in a manner calculated to minimise or avoid unnecessary risks, personally or to others.
27. Report issues and/or incidents relating to staff and young people that have arisen in the day/night promptly to the relevant Manager or appropriate person.
28. Operate at all times in accordance with Rose Houses policies and procedures, with particular reference to Safeguarding, Child Protection, Whistleblowing, Complaints and Representations and Behaviour Policies.
29. Participate in training and take responsibility for personal development.
30. Participate in team meetings, supervisions and annual reviews in accordance with Rose House policy.
31. Work to promote Rose House as a valued, professional asset within its community and conduct themselves at all times in a manner that reinforces this image.
32. Ensure that all actions are in the interests of the Young people and Rose House.
33. To carry out any other reasonable and relevant duties as required.
