BACKGROUND
Cairn Risk is an independent, employee-owned risk management consulting business providing pragmatic and proportionate support to enable the transition to net carbon zero in a safe, effective and attentive way. We provide clear, impartial and practical advice to developers, owner-operators and technology providers, primarily around the generation, storage, transmission, transformation and consumption of clean, sustainable and secure energy. We help our clients demonstrate their risks to people, environment, business and reputation are being managed effectively throughout the full lifecycle of their assets.
OPPORTUNITY
Cairn Risk is recruiting for a Functional Safety (FS) Principal Consultant to support a range of products, projects and clients involved in the energy transition, at a range of life-cycle phases.
FS at Cairn Risk is not a compartmentalised discipline; the role is embedded within a team focused on enabling our client’s energy transition projects; whether the project is explicitly FS, or a wider safety assurance scope but requiring expert FS disciplinary input, we work together as a team to find optimum solutions for our clients.
We are looking for individuals to join our team and lead the delivery of FS services. We welcome applications from anyone who has the knowledge and experience to deliver FS consultancy services and, more generally, help us build a thriving, collaborative and happy consulting business, whether that be through a full-time, part-time, job-share or contract role.

* TUV Functional Safety Engineer certificate or equivalent.
* Proven, practical, experience of FS engineering and management, including; leading PHA, HAZOP, LOPA, and SIL verification and validation activities; carrying out FS assessments at different lifecycle stages, but particularly stages 1 & 2, and FS audits; knowledge and experience of FS standards BS EN IEC 62061, BS EN ISO 13849, BS EN IEC 61508, BS EN IEC 61511; development of a SRS and SSRS and understanding of typical requirements, such as architecture (SFF/DC/HFT); development of FS Management Systems and Plans that include the activities required to ensure that SIL is achieved, including the avoidance and control of systematic errors; carrying out FS training and mentoring of junior staff to develop their own competency.
* Whilst proven, practical, experience of FS in the context of clean energy technologies is beneficial, we can help individuals with FS experience from other industries to adapt their experience to undertake this role.
* Proven, practical experience in wider Technical Safety studies, tools and techniques, including; FMEA/FMEDA; LOPA; Fault/Event Tree Analysis; Qualitative and Quantitative Risk Assessments etc.
* Ability to work with our team to take tried, tested and accepted risk management methodologies from more mature, regulated industries and adapt these to provide a proportionate and pragmatic approach to the management of risk which enables the effective development and deployment of clean energy technologies required to deliver the energy transition.
* Ability to manage multiple projects of varying sizes and complexities whilst developing strong, lasting, relationships with clients of different sizes and maturities.
* Experience in sharing knowledge and experience across projects for the greater good.
* Outstanding communication skills – written and verbal.
