Due to continuing growth and development of Merlin’s attractions and brands on a global scale, we are looking for a Commerce Engineering Solutions Director to join our Technology department on a full time basis. The role will be based at our London Bankside office, with a hybrid element for those looking for more flexibility.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Strategic Leadership
* Set the strategic direction for commerce engineering, aligning tech solutions with digital commerce goals.
* Collaborate with executive leadership to define long-term vision and roadmaps for scalable, innovative commerce platforms.
Technology and Architecture Oversight
* Oversee the design, architecture, and development of robust, scalable, and secure commerce platforms, focusing on TCO and operational costs.
* Lead technology design for eCommerce, Identity, and Payment engines, ensuring best practices in web, app, microservices, APIs, telemetry, and cloud integration.
* Develop technology roadmaps ensuring future supportability and legal compliance across regions.
Team Leadership and Development
* Lead and mentor cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
* Drive talent development and succession planning to meet evolving business and technical needs.
* Inspire and challenge teams to achieve business results.
Agile and DevOps Implementation
* Champion agile methodologies and DevOps practices for efficient, iterative development and rapid delivery of high-quality solutions.
* Promote collaborative problem-solving to enhance speed-to-market and operational efficiency.
Management
* Collaborate with stakeholders (marketing, sales, customer service) to ensure commerce solutions meet business and user needs.
* Communicate technology strategies effectively to non-technical stakeholders to align technical initiatives with business objectives.
Performance and Optimisation
* Drive continuous improvement of commerce platforms, focusing on performance monitoring, testing, and enhancement.
* Oversee performance analysis and optimization for high availability, security, and compliance.
Vendor and Partner Management
* Manage relationships with vendors, platform providers, integrators, and consultants to ensure strategic and operational alignment.
* Evaluate and integrate third-party solutions, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance within the commerce ecosystem.
Qualifications & Experience
* Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or related field.
* Proven experience delivering successful tech portfolios, programs, and projects with global and regional teams.
* Expertise in retail, with experience in multi-location international organizations and delivering cost-effective, value-driven platforms.
* Extensive experience in software engineering, particularly e-commerce or digital commerce solutions in complex environments.
* Strong background in leading large-scale commerce platform architectures (e.g., Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, SAP Commerce Cloud) and overseeing development and integration.
* Deep understanding of modular/microservices architectures, APIs, modern commerce technologies, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
* Expertise in agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and leading engineering teams in iterative development and continuous delivery.
* Experience managing third-party vendor relationships, including contract negotiations and performance management.
* Strong interpersonal and customer-facing skills, with the ability to engage senior management and build trusted relationships.
* Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in high-demand environments, collaborating with product, marketing, operations, and customer experience teams.
* Knowledge of security and compliance standards (e.g., PCI-DSS, GDPR) for commerce systems and transactional platforms.
