About us
Skipton Girls’ High School is a thriving and successful secondary school, with sixth form, based in Skipton. Our school community of 900, includes students from the districts of Craven, Bradford, North Yorkshire, Lancashire and beyond. Students at SGHS are ambitious, kind, articulate and a lot of fun! They are open to new experiences and grab opportunities with both hands. They care about the world we live in and set high standards for living sustainably. Students make friends for life at SGHS and understand that when we support each other, there is no limit to what we can achieve.
Our staff are experts in their field who instil a love of their subject in all students. They place equal value on their own learning, staying at the forefront of their profession, through educational research and academia and are exceptional role models for our students. Our staff are our students’ greatest champions, valuing their happiness and future success.
Our setting beautifully reflects our values and ethos, with traditional buildings sitting comfortably beside our state-of-the-art STEM centre. As participants in our laptop scheme, all students at SGHS have ownership of their own device to enhance their learning and increase their digital literacy. Students and staff are inspired by the beautiful grounds that provide fertile ground for learning and space to relax, let off some steam or simply be. We are held up by the success of our history and driven forwards with innovation and tenacity.
At SGHS, we know how our students learn, think and feel and we know how to empower them so that they can continue the SGHS tradition of pioneering, trailblazing young adults, ready to take on the ever-changing world with compassion and excitement. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of our students by leading the design and delivery of a cutting-edge curriculum, promoting exciting career opportunities, and fostering a love for technology and innovation.
Computer Science at SGHS
Computing sits within the CREATE faculty at SGHS. The CREATE Faculty is an acronym for Computing, Robotics, Engineering, Art, Technology and Enterprise. We currently have ten teaching staff, with Curriculum Leaders for Art, Business Studies, Technology and Computing and a Learning Director with an overview across all subjects in the faculty. We are fortunate to have the services of three technicians working across the department and beyond.
All subjects within CREATE maintain their individual identities within the faculty, with staff and students benefiting from cross-curricular conversations, the sharing of good practice and a team-based mutual support system.
Students are bright and enthusiastic and maintain a very high standard of work, while developing the skills and creativity they need to be independent and self-regulated learners, preparing them for examination and future careers. All subjects across the faculty are option choices at GCSE and are very popular amongst students. Students opt at the end of Year 9 and begin their two year GCSE journey in Year 10. At present, students in Computer Science follow the OCR J277 Computer Science for GCSE and OCR H446 Computer Science for A Level.
CREATE subjects are extremely successful, both at GCSE and A Level with exceptional results. Students go on to study related subjects at degree level and beyond with many student alumni returning to give talks and participate in careers events to champion subjects across the faculty.
With a growing cohort of A level Computer Science students, 80% of the current Y13 have chosen to pursue Computer Science at university.
For the right candidate there are additional, remunerated, opportunities across our Trust Partnership, working with colleagues and students in our primary and secondary phases to build expertise and develop an NSAT approach to Computer Science that inspires and empowers all.
We have a brilliant team of staff and you will be fully supported by an experienced faculty lead and a team of teachers who share a vision of effective teaching and learning founded on collaborative planning, assessment and instruction, and who help each other to continually improve practice. We have an open-door culture and reflective ethos.
If you want to make a difference and are committed to improving life chances for children, we would love to meet you and show you around our fantastic school, please contact Christine Simmonite, Headteacher’s PA, simmonitec@sghs.org.uk to arrange a visit.
