Principal Engineer & FE Analyst – Rigid Pipeline Design

The Opportunity:
we are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Principal Engineer & FE Analyst to join our Rigid Pipeline Design discipline in Sutton, UK.
This role is part of the Design & Analysis department within our Global Project Centre business unit. You will play a pivotal role in the design and analysis of subsea rigid pipelines across tenders, FEEDs, and EPCIs. Additionally, you will contribute to continuous improvements and technology developments within the discipline.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide specialist engineering expertise in subsea rigid pipeline and spool design, ensuring alignment with client specifications, industry codes, and guidelines.
* Conduct in-place design calculations and analysis, including mechanical and thermomechanical design, lateral buckling, walking assessment, FEA analysis using Abaqus, and post-lay assessments.
* Prepare and review technical deliverables, including design reports, technical notes, engineering drawings, risk assessments, material take-offs, and deviation requests.
* Identify and manage risks, participate in risk assessments, and propose mitigation strategies.
* Supervise and coordinate small teams or junior engineers, ensuring efficient task execution within deadlines and budget constraints.
* Contribute to engineering tool development, process improvements, and technology advancements.
* Ensure best practices, project experience, and lessons learned are implemented in project execution.
Essential Skills & Experience:
* Degree in a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
* Strong knowledge of subsea pipeline design and finite element analysis (FEA) using Abaqus.
* Experience in lateral buckling and walking analyses.
* Ability to manage time, budgets, and risks effectively while working under pressure.
* Strong understanding of industry codes, client specifications, and project requirements.
* Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to lead and mentor junior engineers.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
* MSc or PhD in a STEM subject.
* Previous engineering experience in the subsea energy industry.
* Proficiency in VBA and/or Python for engineering applications.
* Knowledge of fracture mechanics / ECA, installation engineering, welding, fabrication, and geotechnical considerations for rigid pipelines.
* Understanding of SURF (Subsea, Umbilicals, Risers, and Flowlines) design and developments.
* Experience working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural engineering team.
* Chartership with a relevant professional engineering institution (e.g., IMechE, ICE, etc.).
