Join Halesowen College as the new Director of People & Culture to support and influence the College, the people and the students to realise every opportunity to become ‘Exceptional’.
Who we are.
At its heart, Halesowen College is a tertiary college offering young people a wide range of opportunities to follow either academic or vocational pathways. 16-18 learners form most of our learner body, and we intend that to remain the case even as we grow and diversify further. We are a college that aims to be exceptional, determined to provide the best possible education and training for all our learners, striving for excellence in all that we do. Halesowen College is a lively, ambitious and highly inclusive tertiary college providing a broad and extremely supportive education to young people from across the West Midlands and in an increasing range of vocational higher education courses, apprenticeships and training for adults. We have over 4,000 learners. The College has maintained a good reputation and Ofsted rating for a sustained period. Our recent Ofsted report demonstrates that we know our College well, that there is a drive for continuous improvement, and that we are determined to provide the best possible education and training for all our learners.
About the role.
We know that to unlock the potential of our learners through learning we must have a staff team who are skilled, developed, committed, and supported. Our entire employee experience needs to be excellent, from the first point that a candidate interacts with us about a job vacancy, through to their first few weeks and their ongoing staff journey at Halesowen College. The Director of People & Culture will be our strategic expert in people relations, with a natural ability to coach and support their direct reports and wider leadership colleagues whilst also being able and willing to support managers, and staff across our College. Applying expert knowledge gained in other settings of comparable size and complexity, the person appointed will build on the success of our outgoing Director of HR and push forward with our people strategy– achieving quite significant developments around:
1. Attraction and recruitment of talented and diverse staff
2. Providing a fantastic employee journey
3. Building a sense of belonging through a fully engaged workforce and a culture of inclusion and well-being
4. Enhancing our learning culture and enabling everyone to thrive
5. Supporting and leading change where it is necessary for the College to adapt and develop
6. Delivering a business partnering service through acting as supportive partners, critical friends, and trusted colleagues in order to drive organisational effectiveness
7. Enabling leaders to build a high-performing culture by developing skills, knowledge, and expertise
8. Building trust and respect through positive employer relations and working collaboratively with our trade unions
9. Recognising and rewarding staff so that they feel valued and motivated
Who we are looking for.
As the most senior leader with responsibility for people services, organisational development, culture, and change, and as a member of our senior leadership team, we require a talented senior leader who can add value to Halesowen College and our employee experience. It is therefore important that the person appointed brings personal experience of working at a strategic level as part of their organisation’s senior team or that they have the ambition, track record and experience to be taking the next step on the career ladder as an aspiring senior leader. You will need to be a visionary leader who can help us to do even better and be ever better so that Halesowen College becomes an employer of choice in both the FE sector and the region. We welcome new ideas, concepts and ways of doing things differently in order to build on the successes achieved so far. Whilst the ability to be, think, and act strategically is important, we also need our Director of People & Culture to have an interest in and an ability to delve into the details, to ensure checks and balances and to test the operations at times and be assured that strategy and vision is being embedded into the organisation, along with the culture to be exceptional. Skilled in coaching, we need you to be people-focused in order to get the best out of others.
Our Director of People & Culture needs to be positive about the challenges we face and as ambitious as we are about the potential that Halesowen College has to positively affect the lives and future livelihoods of learners from across the communities that we serve, and the wider West Midlands region. This is anything but a traditional HR Director role, and we need you to recognise how your work contributes to our overall mission. Our most important stakeholders are our students, and many of them come from deprived socio-economic backgrounds. We have a significant job to do in order to help influence their futures, and we can only achieve this if our talented staff team are engaged, developed, and happy in their work. With an eye for detail and competence in both written and spoken communications, you’ll be an influencer who can advocate for and with your fellow team colleagues and help guide the senior leadership team and our Board of Governors, through the translation of data into reports which inform strategic developments. Working as a senior leader of Halesowen College, we will provide you with career-enhancing opportunities. We are working at pace to continue the transformation of our organisation and feel proud of our significant developments to date. In order to be truly outstanding, our Director of People & Culture needs to be an outstanding leader of people services.
Peridot Partners and Halesowen College are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.
