Work within the Scenic Construction Workshop team, specialising in set construction for Theatr Clwyd productions to the highest standards. Primarily based in the Workshop, with occasional collaboration across the Production Department.
Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Supervise Workshop Assistants, casual, and freelance staff, coordinating workflow and updating the Workshop Manager.
2. Assist in planning and managing workflow, leading the team during builds, fit-ups, get-outs, and strikes while ensuring a safe, compliant work environment (PUWER, COSHH, LOLER).
3. Deputise for the Workshop Manager when required.
4. Maintain a clean, organized workspace.
5. Order materials and services, liaising with the Production Manager and Head of Production on budgets when necessary.
6. Construct sets, props, and production items to high standards within time and budget constraints.
7. Provide designers with practical information and assist with fit-ups and production weeks.
8. Participate in get-ins, fit-ups, strikes, and get-outs, handling the assembly, rigging, and adjustment of scenery, props, and lifting equipment.
9. Oversee casual staff and support training and performance monitoring of Workshop Assistants, casual, and freelance staff.
10. Interpret designs, create plans, and working drawings using CAD.
11. Source and order stock and consumables, notifying the Workshop Manager of any specialist equipment needs.
12. Work within set budgets and provide technical assistance to external users when required.
13. Collaborate with the Scenic Artist to ensure efficiency in the build process.
14. Attend meetings and represent the department when needed.
Health and Safety
Ensure Health and Safety requirements are met. Attend training and stay informed on regulations related to workshop spaces, machinery, and equipment. Properly shut down specialist equipment daily and mitigate potential hazards promptly. Produce risk assessments and method statements as needed.
Other
Ensure safe and accessible storage of all equipment. Maintain an inventory of equipment and materials. Perform additional duties as reasonably requested by the Workshop Manager, Production Manager, or Head of Production.
Job Requirements
Relevant experience in construction, carpentry, or metal fabrication, ideally in theatre. Proven ability to supervise, lead, and motivate teams. Strong experience in construction, carpentry, welding, and metal fabrication. Competence in using and maintaining workshop tools, portable power tools, and hand tools safely. Ability to interpret and prepare construction drawings, with CAD knowledge. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with non-technical users. Organised, able to meet deadlines and manage priorities effectively. Experience in Health and Safety implementation and risk assessments. Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments. Willingness to work flexible and unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends. Full, clean driving licence.
Job Responsibilities
* Experience and knowledge of mainstream UK theatre production.
* Working knowledge of rigging methods and the safe use of lifting gear.
* Experience of setting up and rigging scenery and stage decking systems.
* Current forklift truck certificate.
* Training in manual handling, safe ladder use and working at height.
