The successful candidate will have previous experience working in a school setting and be responsible for maintaining the school's premises, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment for staff, students, and visitors. Key Responsibilities of a School Caretaker: Premises Maintenance: Carry out daily cleaning and maintenance of the school premises, including classrooms, hallways, toilets, and staff areas. Ensure that the school building and grounds are safe, clean, and tidy, addressing any maintenance issues promptly. Perform minor repairs to the school buildings, fixtures, and fittings as needed, including painting, plumbing, and general upkeep. Ensure that all school equipment and furniture is in good condition, repairing or replacing items as necessary. Health and Safety: Ensure that the school complies with health and safety regulations by carrying out regular checks and addressing any potential hazards. Manage the safe storage and handling of cleaning materials and equipment. Carry out risk assessments and ensure that safety protocols are followed, particularly during school events, playtimes, and after-school activities. Ensure that emergency exits, fire alarms, and other safety equipment are functional and maintained. Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance: Maintain the outdoor areas of the school, including playgrounds, gardens, and pathways, ensuring they are safe and well-kept. Undertake gardening duties as required, including lawn mowing, weeding, and hedge trimming. Clear snow and ice during winter months to ensure the safety of students and staff. Security and Access Control: Open and close the school premises as required, ensuring the building is secure at the end of each day. Monitor and control access to the school, ensuring that only authorised personnel and visitors are allowed on-site. Report any security concerns or incidents to the school leadership team promptly. Support for School Activities: Assist with setting up and preparing school halls, classrooms, and other areas for events, assemblies, and after-school activities. Support with the movement of furniture, equipment, and supplies across the school as needed. Assist with the collection and disposal of waste in accordance with the school's policies. Key Skills and Qualifications: Experience: Previous experience working as a caretaker or in a similar facilities management role, ideally within a school or educational setting. Practical knowledge of maintenance tasks, including minor repairs, cleaning, and safety protocols. A good understanding of health and safety procedures within a school environment. Skills and Attributes: Excellent practical skills and a hands-on approach to work. Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. Ability to work independently and use initiative to solve problems. A proactive attitude and willingness to contribute to the school's operations and environment. Good communication skills and the ability to work well with staff, students, and visitors. Personal Specification: Reliable, flexible, and trustworthy with a strong sense of responsibility.
