Process Development Chemist (Polymer Science Background)
We are in search of a dedicated Chemist with an extensive specialised background in Polymer Science to join our team. As a key contributor, you will play a pivotal role in our development and production processes, leveraging your expertise in organic chemistry and polymer science to enhance our manufacturing capabilities and contribute to the development of innovative solutions in the enzymatic depolymerisation of plastics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Process Development
1. Devise end-to-end processes at the bench-scale level for converting plastic waste into chemical building blocks in collaboration with the wider team.
2. Utilise in-depth knowledge of polymer science to design, optimise and develop production processes, ensuring efficiency and quality in the manufacturing of polymer-based materials.
3. Design and execute experiments, focusing on the disruption of intermolecular interactions, separation of intermediates, depolymerisation and repolymerisation of plastics.
4. Lead the troubleshooting and problem-solving initiatives related to all processes for enzymatic depolymerisation identifying and implementing solutions to enhance productivity and quality standards.
5. Dedicate substantial time to laboratory work conducting experiments and trials.
6. Carry out any other ad hoc laboratory work as required.
7. Work with strict health and safety processes.
Characterisation
1. Define the characterisation of polymers composite feedstock and intermediate materials.
2. Conduct thorough analyses and assessments of polymer properties, employing various analytical techniques to ensure product quality and reliability.
3. Lead the effort to identify, quantify, and characterise unknown chemical contaminants using state-of-the-art analytical techniques.
4. Own a working knowledge of NMR and HPLC techniques.
Projects
1. Lead and support efforts in scaling up polymer-based processes from laboratory to pilot-scale production, ensuring seamless transition and efficiency.
2. Manage and carry out experiments and trials for internal pipeline development programmes.
3. Produce weekly reports on projects and input materials testing.
Communication and Reporting
1. Maintain comprehensive records, including experimental data, observations, and outcomes, following strict documentation protocols.
2. Effectively communicate experimental results and implications to engineers, the commercial team and external partners.
3. Drive research and development efforts aimed at enhancing existing processes, exploring new technologies, and improving product performance.
4. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and actively participate in ideation, development, and enhancement of enzymatic reactions and chemical separations to bolster our techno-economics.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with a background in Polymer Science.
2. At least 3 years proven industrial experience in a production or manufacturing environment, in roles directly related to polymer science, synthesis, or production.
3. Proficiency in utilizing analytical instruments and techniques specific to polymer science (e.g., FTIR, DSC, TGA etc).
PREFERRED
1. Degree in organic chemistry with a robust background in polymer science.
2. Experience in working with enzymes and scaling up polymer processes from lab to pilot-scale or industrial production.
3. Demonstrated expertise in polymer characterisation, processing, and synthesis techniques.
4. Familiarity with polymerisation techniques and polymer modification methods.
5. Knowledge of safety protocols and regulatory compliance in polymer production environments.
