Axcis are working with an independent Special Needs Day School in South Molton, who are looking for Mentor Assistants working in the Primary Section in the school. The children have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, so you must be experienced in this category of SEND. You will be required on a full-time basis working Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 3:30, paying a rate of £85 a day. The school is based in a very rural area of North Devon surrounded by countryside, so a car driver is essential.
The school is rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted and offers a wonderful array of resources. The school partners up with an activity group in the area and often gives the children outdoor education through challenging activities, to build on their confidence and independence. The school also has therapy dogs that live on site helping the children’s emotional wellbeing.
The children that attend the school have been out of education at some point in their lives and need an adaptive curriculum to meet their EHCP’s. The ideal candidate must have experience working with children or adults with trauma (SEMH) that display challenging behaviour. Some have challenging behaviour due to their backgrounds or are delicate and need to build confidence, self-esteem, or resilience as well as social interaction.
Your role as a mentor assistant is to work 1-1 with a child giving them a trusting relationship, assisting with their social development, class learning, and providing them the ability to manage their feelings. The young people are behind peers in terms of social life and independence skills. This is a highly rewarding job being a role model and changing a child’s life. Sporty, outdoor adventurous candidates are desirable.
Axcis specialise in Special Educational Needs and are the chosen suppliers for NASEN, a renowned charitable membership organisation that supports those working with and for children with SEND and Learning differences. INDDEV
