Job Description
The University of Portsmouth is a global employer of choice where exceptional people create, share and apply knowledge that makes a difference.
Experience the pride of being part of a select group – one of only four universities in the south-east of England to achieve a prestigious Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Additionally, we proudly rank among the top 140 universities globally in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.
Ambition, Responsibility and Openness drive our every endeavour. Join our esteemed institution with a proven track record of success, and where dedication to excellence is key. We want people to make their mark in a professional community that truly values people, innovation, and achievement.
The Role:
Applicants are invited for a 3-month University-funded position of Research Impact Support Officer (Grade 5). The project will be based in the Faculty of Technology at the University of Portsmouth.
Keeping track of the "impact" of our research is important. One of our strengths as an institution is that so much of our work does have a real-world impact, on areas as diverse as improving the quality of waste water to helping keep patients alive in hospital.
The successful applicant will work with some of our academic leads to find out about their research and to then go away and capture evidence of the impact that it has had on the world. For every type of impact, there will be different evidence of its effect, so this will be an interesting role encompassing a wide variety of potential information sources. The job is a bit like being a detective – you know that the evidence is out there, but you have to find it (though it isn't usually hidden!).
The support officer will gain an understanding of how impact is achieved, evidenced, recorded, and assessed.
Specific Requirements:
1. Ideally a graduate (of any discipline) or have equivalent experience.
2. Customer-focused and able to work well both in a team and individually.
3. Good IT skills in using record-keeping systems.
4. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
5. Systematic approach and attention to detail, but able to prioritise and manage your own time.
The post is based in the Faculty of Technology, University of Portsmouth, with the appointment effective as soon as possible after interview. The fixed-term contract is expected to come to an end on 31 July 2025, but there may be some flexibility. We may also consider a fractional appointment.
For informal enquiries about the project please contact Professor Jim Briggs at Jim.Briggs@port.ac.uk or phone +44 (0)23 9284 6438.
For internal candidates, it may be possible to apply for this role under the Secondment Policy. If you wish to apply as a secondee, you must have the approval of your line manager in advance of submitting your application form. Please confirm in your application that your line manager has approved this.
