We are AMS. We are a global total workforce solutions firm; we enable organisations to thrive in an age of constant change by building, re-shaping, and optimising workforces. Our Contingent Workforce Solution (CWS) is one of our service offerings; we act as an extension of Rolls-Royce’s recruitment team and provide professional interim and temporary resources.
We are looking for a Structural System Design Engineer/ Stress Engineer on a 12-month contract based in Derby on behalf of Rolls-Royce who develop cutting-edge technologies that deliver clean, safe and competitive solutions to meet the planet’s vital power needs.
The Structural System Design Engineer/ Stress Engineer role involves using a variety of finite element tools to assess the mechanical behaviour of the engine and powerplant assembly under static (flight loads, mechanical deflections) and dynamic (vibration, FBO, etc.) conditions. The role involves interfacing with a wide variety of internal customers, ranging from the stress analysis team who use the loads produced as inputs to their analysis through to the airframers when assessing aircraft system level issues such as post FBO windmilling.
The Stress Engineer supports the Design function by undertaking analysis of the proposed designs to ensure that they are robust and that they meet requirements. The Mechanical Integrity Engineer also makes recommendations to optimise the design and applies Robust Engineering (Design for Process Excellence) principles.
Day-to-Day Activities:
* Conduct Structure Mechanical Design and Analysis. This includes selection and generation as well as involvement in further development of numerical models, use of numerical calculation methods, developing interdisciplinary agreed boundary conditions and implementation into own models as well as into models of other disciplines (e.g. performance), plausibility check of boundary conditions, execution and analysis of numerical model calculations, understanding calculations as well as deriving suggestions for improvements.
* Conduct Structure Mechanical experiments. This includes preparation of experiment specifications for tests on test rigs and engines, supervision and support of experiments, plausibility check of results during the execution of the test, analysis and interpretation of test results and comparison with analytical and/or empirical models.
* Resolve problems through evaluative judgements. Analyse factual information from multiple sources, interpret results and identify effective solutions by applying technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.
* Be responsible for defined technical packages/investigations of work providing delivery against programme milestones within agreed cost, timescale and quality requirements.
* Act as a point of contact within a given engineering discipline and share subject matter knowledge across the function. This may include providing advisory services to designated customers, influencing their peer group, representing senior departmental staff and acting as advisor/coach on matters where they are technically authoritative.
Key Skills/Qualifications:
* Experience as a Structural System Design Engineer/ Stress Engineer within an aerospace engineering environment.
* Qualifications: bachelor’s degree within a suitable engineering discipline.
* Working knowledge of Gas turbine engines.
* Experience using systems such as Nastran, Ansys, and HyperMesh (Nice to have: MATLAB, VBA, or Python).
