The Royal College of Art (RCA) is seeking a Tutor (Teaching) to contribute to the internationally renowned V&A/RCA MA History of Design programme within the School of Arts & Humanities. This fixed-term role provides 0.4 FTE Fellowship teaching cover from 1 April to 31 August 2025.
About the Role
The Tutor will support and promote the study of expanded History of Design and Material Culture, working closely with the Head of Programme and Senior Tutor. They will play a key role in delivering high-quality teaching, supervision, and research support, while also contributing to publications, symposia, exhibitions, and other programme-led projects.
The appointed candidate will bring current knowledge of experience design practices and research within national and international contexts. They will ensure that the curriculum reflects contemporary changes in technology, media, education, and the wider socio-political environment, fostering academic innovation within the field.
About You
We are looking for an outstanding researcher and/or practitioner in design history and material culture studies. You will have:
* Experience in teaching and supervising postgraduate students in design history and material culture.
* Expertise in methods and approaches in contemporary history, including the use of digital sources.
* A broad knowledge of the history of design and material culture from 1800 to the present.
* A demonstrable commitment to global design histories and an active engagement with ethical working and equal opportunities in the discipline.
Key Responsibilities
* Teach and support V&A/RCA MA History of Design students through lectures, workshops, seminars, and 1:1 tutoring.
* Contribute to the development of the curriculum, including pioneering new teaching methods.
* Engage with international networks to enhance the programme's profile.
* Undertake teaching and assessment administration as required.
* Represent and advocate for the Royal College of Art, acting as an ambassador for its mission and values.
