What we’re looking for
As a Senior Technical Lead in the Human Safety and Risk team, you will be responsible for supporting the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub’s (MDH) Human Safety and Risk program. Working closely with colleagues with human factors expertise, you will apply your expertise in risk assessment to ensure the safe integration of alternative fuels (e.g., ammonia, methanol, hydrogen) and new technologies in the maritime sector. Some knowledge and familiarity with human factors principles and their application within high-hazard industries is required. This role involves contributing to complex projects while overseeing the professional development and work of a Risk Engineer, ensuring both line management and technical mentorship.
This is a key role for a professional with approx. 7 - 12 years of experience, who is eager to grow their leadership and technical capabilities in the field of risk management.

The role
* Risk Assessment for Alternative Fuels and Technologies:
Conduct and lead qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for alternative fuels and emerging maritime technologies. Work closely with human factors colleagues to ensure human factors and technical safety are integrated throughout risk management processes, particularly in operational contexts involving high-risk environments such as ammonia bunkering or hydrogen fuel handling.
* Project Leadership:
Lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary projects focused on risk and human safety in the energy transition. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to address emerging risks in alternative fuel adoption.
* Line Management and Mentorship:
Provide direct line management to a Risk Engineer, including technical oversight, workload management, and career development support. Mentor and coach the Risk Engineer, facilitating knowledge transfer, skill development, and professional growth.
* Support Development of Safety Culture, Competency and future strategies:
Support colleagues in building and sustaining a culture of safety across the industry, focusing on process safety approaches and competency development for both shore-side and vessel-based personnel. This includes developing training programs and competency frameworks to support the safe handling of alternative fuels.
* Stakeholder Engagement and Advisory:
Work with internal teams, regulators, and industry partners to advocate for best practices in safety, risk management, and human factors integration across the maritime decarbonisation landscape.
* Continuous Professional Development:
Stay current with the latest industry standards, research, and best practices in the properties of alternative, risk management, and safety. Ensure you and your team maintain a high level of technical expertise and professional development.
Role Dimensions:
* Direct Reports: 1 (Risk Engineer)
* Geographic Scope: Global, with focus on projects related to maritime decarbonisation and human safety.
* Key Stakeholders: Internal (MDH Human Factors experts, Other MDH colleagues, LR teams), external (clients, regulatory bodies, industry partners).
What you bring
* Education:
A degree in a relevant Engineering discipline (Chemical, Mechanical or Marine), or a related field. A Master's degree or professional certifications in safety or risk management is desirable. Knowledge and understanding of Human Factors, either through CPD or appropriate modules.
* Experience:
7-12 years of experience in risk assessment or safety management,, preferably within maritime, oil and gas, process, energy, or transport sectors. Experience with human factors, alternative fuels and emerging maritime technologies is highly valued.
* Professional Skills:
o Expertise in human factors integration in risk management processes.
o Experience in managing or mentoring junior team members is essential.
o Strong knowledge of safety-critical systems and hazard assessment techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie, LOPA, FTA, ETA, consequence analysis tools and QRA).
* Certifications:
Chartered Engineer status or working towards membership in a relevant professional body is preferred.

* Leadership & Mentorship:
Guide and develop the Risk Engineer, providing coaching and constructive feedback to enable career growth and skill development. Set clear goals and foster a high-performance team environment.
* Commercial Acumen:
Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, and enhance service delivery. Understand the commercial context of projects and contribute to the growth of the MDH business.
* Delivering Results:
Maintain high standards of accountability and performance, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within scope, and to the highest safety standards. Proactively address challenges to maintain progress.
