Overview
Serpentine Community Garden is a growing space for the people of Buxton and the surrounding area. It is run by a hard-working group of volunteers, members and trustees. Our objective as a charity is to advance education in horticultural practices. Our aim is to grow people and to grow plants.
1. We teach and learn about sustainable growing practices in the High Peak climate.
2. We share knowledge with our volunteers and visitors.
3. We build and maintain an environment where all people are welcome, enjoying what they are doing and having social interaction with others.
4. We support a range of projects to engage the local community in horticulture for well-being.
HEART (Heritage, Environment and Resources Team) Foundation
Our site has been involved in horticultural activity since the 1890s and has a long history of growing plants for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors. The refurbishment of the original stone built stores and workshops will provide accessible, comfortable, indoor spaces for volunteers, visitors and temporary staff. The re-purposed buildings will enable us to broaden our education and community engagement programmes and offer all season activities.
We recognise the organisational challenge of extending activity into a major building project whilst sustaining success and support garnered over eight years of community service. We want to safeguard strengths whilst extending our scope. The foundation project’s legacy will be to launch development and delivery of a rebuild, if agreed, and ensure that all is in place for the buildings to be well-used. An alternative outcome is also possible: that the charity decides to sustain activity without a major building project.
Work planned for the foundation stage
1. Commissioning reports and surveys to inform development plans for refurbishments of old stone stores on site.
2. Conducting, with paid consultancy support, a review of the charity’s governance.
3. Training programme for existing and new trustees.
4. Strengthening engagement in heritage and horticulture with new audiences.
5. Conducting consultation events with volunteers and members to review plans and confirm commitment. (Will include options for maintaining activity for period when the space will be a building site with limited opportunity for community use.)
The brief
The consultant will be required to provide a detailed methodology on how the evaluation of the work above will be carried out and to demonstrate how the approach adheres to the Heritage Fund recommended guidance and good practice.
