We’re looking for a Designer/Engineer to join our Mechanical design team. If the qualifications or experience are not at the required level for the Grade E Engineer role, then candidates may be offered a Designer role at Grade D, and targeted training will be provided to reach the required standard.Please indicate on your application form which role/s you would like to be considered for.
The team is responsible for the main machinery and propulsion, including all supporting sub-systems and ancillary equipment, across all the RNLI’s floating assets. Working in collaboration with other Engineering colleagues, Production, Procurement, Maintenance, and Operations teams, you will be supporting the existing fleet, new construction projects, and developing new equipment in line with departmental priorities as well as to support obsolescence. Your commitment to helping us produce and evaluate innovative, practical, and cost-effective engineering and design solutions will be key.

Your Role
As a Designer/Engineer, you will be tasked with focus on the following areas:
* To carry out design and development work and configuration change control of technical documentation to facilitate the through-life product configuration of all assets and their associated equipment using the RNLI business systems and processes.
* To ensure that the design of RNLI plant, equipment, and procedures are developed in accordance with Engineering processes and standards.
* To work within one or more of the Engineering delivery and project cells and to work with the Cell Leads and project managers to ensure work is completed to agreed timescales and that Cell processes are followed.
* To act as a designated engineering signatory in accordance with the Engineering delegated authority.
* To assist in providing technical support to coastal staff and volunteers.
* To liaise with boatyards, contractors, and suppliers in conjunction with procurement and technical surveyors.
* To plan and undertake technical investigations, troubleshooting, trials, and analysis of data at boatyards, contractor’s premises, and on-board plant.
* To become involved in other ad hoc tasks and projects as required.
About You
You’ll be an output-focused individual with a dynamic approach to your work, who is looking to develop your career in an exciting engineering environment. To be considered for this role you will need:
* An IMechE accredited Mechanical (or equivalent) engineering qualification equivalent to the England, Wales, and Northern Ireland qualification level 5 as defined by the UK government, or at level 3 or 4 with proven additional experience.
* For the Engineer role, we require experience working as a Marine Engineer in a technical design office environment.
* A motivated individual with a positive attitude. A team player, able to collaborate and perform under pressure.
* A proven ability to develop novel strategies to overcome issues and to innovate to improve operational delivery.
* Good communication skills, both written and presentational.
* Good team working, organisation, communication, and attention to detail.
This is not an operational seagoing position; however, due to the nature of the role, it is highly desirable, but not essential, that the post holder be capable of going afloat in all sea conditions.
