The Colchester Urology Fellowship Programme is designed to provide mid-grade training posts at Specialist Registrar and post SPR level. The programme has seven fellows in rotation with one Specialty Trainee on the East of England Rotation.
A number of previous post holders have gone on to specialised further fellowships or Consultant Urologist posts via CESR (Article 14).
The Urology unit currently has eight consultants with individual sub-speciality interests that allow them to provide SPR level mentoring. Three consultants specialising in oncology perform laparoscopic and robotic radical prostatectomy as well as laparoscopic and robotic nephrectomy. One consultant specialises in robotic and laparoscopic nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.
The post holder will be employed as a whole time Urology Specialist on the basis of 10 sessions. The post involves:
• Core and specialist urological surgical procedures performed on the applicants own operating lists for patients under the care of Consultant Urological Surgeons
• Outpatient clinics held on a weekly basis either at Colchester Hospital or additionally at a peripheral site served by the trust.
• Day case surgery
• Diagnostic day case procedures including flexible cystoscopy (haematuria clinics)
• Educational supervision to junior medical staff
• Responsibility for carrying out and contributing to clinical audit activity and local governance initiatives.
• Contributing to the writing of basic science and clinical papers
• Contributing to the weekly MDT meetings
• Managerial responsibilities where appropriate
• Forming of a 1 in 8 on-call rota with prospective cover

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

We provide one-on-one training in theatre and outpatients tailored to each individual fellow’s level. In addition to this each fellow participates in a 1 in 8 prospective on-call EWTD compliant rota. The post holder will be employed as a whole time Urology Fellow 40 hours per week.
The department encourages academic activity and previous post holders have contributed to publications in various journals. There is also an opportunity to join the 2 year part time MSc programme in Urology run by Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge that includes a one week teaching module at ARU and a second clinical week at Addenbrooke’s hospital, Cambridge.
The initial contract is for a year but a number of previous post holders have by mutual agreement extended this for a length of time that suited them.
