We are looking for an Assistant Editor to join us at Express Online.
We are keen to speak with candidates that are ready to lead our teams of writers in delivering content which informs, inspires, indulges and informs our readers about their lives.
As our Assistant Editor you will be responsible for managing content, developing teams and working closely with our heads of departments.
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.
We are happy to consider applications on a flexible working basis, and will always aim to accommodate requests where possible.
This role is home and hub based linked to our London Hub. Therefore you must be based in and around London to be considered.
Job Description
What will the role involve?
You will manage a team of reporters and editors every day covering that day’s biggest stories while ensuring we’re bringing in lots of our own exclusives. You will have to make smart choices on the best stories to cover and be able to work calmly under pressure when working to very tight deadlines. Growing our digital audience will be a top priority - and you’ll need to be passionate about doing it. We also want someone who will bring in bags of ideas for features and move on the day’s biggest stories.
You will do one-to-ones with reporters and may need to lead digital conferences, represent the department and work with other editorial leaders. You’ll also need to ensure all content is legally and IPSO compliant while taking an interest in development of staff and ensuring the department’s culture is open and inclusive.
Qualifications
Who are we looking for?
You are an experienced journalist with your NCTJ or equivalent qualification and media law knowledge. You will be a capable, assured and experienced digital media expert and will have worked at a national or major regional level before. You will manage a talented, driven team with ease, and be able to support and direct in a pressured and frequently changing environment.
You have first rate communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to create content at pace whilst meeting deadlines with ease. You enjoy the test of working to tight deadlines and experience of working in a digital newsroom and SEO would be beneficial.
