Job overview
The post holder will work alongside the existing consultant liaison psychiatrists. The post holder will be expected to predominantly assess and manage adults of working age, including perinatal patients presenting with mental health problems. At times, however, the post holder may also be required to assess later life patients presenting with, for example, delirium and/or dementia.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will concentrate on the delivery of clinical duties. The post holder will provide medical leadership to the team, particularly for adults of working age. The number and type of patients that the post holder will see during a clinical programmed activity session will vary due to the nature of Liaison Psychiatry work. A typical clinical session would usually involve seeing one to three liaison cases, as well as supervising other members of the team on an individual basis and as part of team clinical supervision. Along with the other senior medics on the team, the post holder will be involved in Mental Health Act assessments and Section 136 cases. It is anticipated that this would amount to between two and three Mental Health Act assessments per week. It will be necessary also to see complex cases to help establish diagnosis and treatment plans. Close liaison with all Manchester Royal Infirmary general medical and surgical ward colleagues, and also with the ED staff, will be important to improve patient care.
