An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated dietitian to join the dietetic department at University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP). The successful candidate will work as a member of the specialist orthopaedic multidisciplinary team to provide a dietetic service to orthopaedic inpatients.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
* To work as an active member of the specialist orthopaedic multidisciplinary team
* To be responsible for providing a specialist dietetic service, following evidence-based practice across the orthopaedic wards at UHP
* To participate in regular teaching and training for patients and healthcare professionals
* To supervise dietetic assistant(s) and dietetic students
* To monitor and report dietetic outcome measures for orthopaedic inpatients
* To act as a reliable source of dietetic knowledge and provide expertise to patients, relatives and healthcare professionals
* To participate in audit and research related to orthopaedics in order to improve clinical outcomes and develop the dietetic service
* To be involved in nutrition and dietetic departmental activities and contribute to the delivery of a Trust wide dietetic service.

Job responsibilities
1. Provide a high standard of dietetic service to patients through comprehensive assessment, planning, and monitoring of patient requirements using evidence-based practice.
2. Work effectively as an individual and/or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
3. Communicate accurately in writing and/or verbally with other health professionals. Record all assessments and interventions in clinical notes, nursing notes and dietetic record cards in line with BDA guidelines.
4. Adapt to changing demands of the job to provide a dietetic service in the absence of co-workers.
5. Develop and apply knowledge in specialist areas, under the supervision of a senior dietitian.
6. Review and update resource material using evidence-based information.
7. Ensure that resources are used effectively and in accordance with departmental guidelines.
8. Prepare and deliver presentations and training programmes to patients and healthcare professionals using current evidence-based resources.
9. Participate in education and training of student dietitians with clinical supervisory skills training.
10. Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development to improve patient centred care.
11. Participate in audits and quality monitoring.
12. Proactively contribute to the achievement of clinical outcomes through individual and team effort.
13. Be aware of and adhere to all trust policies and procedures, the Health & Safety at Work Act and Data Protection Act.
14. Liaises with hotel services department to ensure correct provision of therapeutic diets to inpatients on assigned ward

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
* BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics
* HCPC Registration
Desirable
* Completion of clinical supervisory skills training
* Counselling skills training
Knowledge and experience
Essential
* Demonstrable Post-graduate NHS experience across a variety of specialities, including surgical experience
* An understanding of Orthopaedics and the role nutrition plays in the acute and recovery phase post-surgery
* Proven knowledge of anthropometry, biochemistry and pharmacology to undertake a full nutrition assessment specific to Orthopaedic patients
* Competence in calculating nutritional requirements
Desirable
* Demonstrable experience in audits and research
* Previous working at Band 6 level within inpatient trauma or surgical specialities
* Previous demonstrable experience of service development
* Previous demonstrable experience of outcome monitoring
Aptitude and abilities
Essential
* Good communication skills, written and verbal with the ability to share complex clinical information at an appropriate level
* Ability to independently manage an inpatient clinical caseload with a degree of supervision
* Excellent organisational, time management and prioritisation skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
* Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and presentations

* Resourceful and attention to detail
* Previous line managing experience junior dietitians/ dietetic assistants
