Consultant in Critical Care & Anaesthetics
The advertised post of Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthetics is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.
The Critical Care Department is a 12-bedded, purpose-built, mixed medical and surgical adult critical care unit, accepting approximately 1000 admissions per year. There are 6 level 3 and 6 level 2 commissioned beds, which are used flexibly, with the ability to increase bed capacity if required. The unit is equipped to a very high standard, with the addition of new BBraun smart pump technology, new fully integrated GE monitoring, and new BBraun CRRT machines, all within the last 2 years, to provide comprehensive care of the critically ill patient. The department is recognized for intermediate and advanced training in Intensive Care Medicine.
Consultant cover is provided by 10 WTE's with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine. There are 20 daytime weekday sessions delivered by Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine. Daytime delivery of sessions is in blocks of two to five days. The junior resident rota is staffed by a combination of Core and Specialty Anaesthetics trainees, ACCS trainees, Respiratory Specialty trainees, and Foundation Programme doctors.
Main duties of the job
This is a new post for an anaesthetist who is a critical care physician with a specialist interest in transfer and paediatric stabilisation and will be confident in the use of regional anaesthetic techniques for breast surgery. The post holder will provide high-quality care for patients within the Critical Care Unit and provide perioperative care for elective and emergency patients across the range of specialities available within the QE Hospital. The post holder will also be expected to attend and stabilise patients of any age in the Emergency Department as well as inpatients within the QE Hospital. The post holder will also strengthen service provision for breast surgery regional anaesthesia and the stabilisation of critically unwell children. The post holder will provide cascade training to the current consultant Anaesthetic and Critical Care teams and will be expected to provide teaching up to the level of higher and advanced trainees in both anaesthetics and critical care. The appointment of a new consultant will enable the Critical Care on-call frequency to extend to 1:12. On-call commitment is for the critical care department only.
The post holder will work flexibly with their Consultant colleagues within the wide remit of the Department's activity. A formal job plan will be agreed on appointment.

Job responsibilities
The role is based in the Department of Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. This service sits within the Surgical Business Unit (SBU). The SBU also incorporates all surgical specialties, Women's Health, and Paediatrics. There are separate Clinical Leads for Anaesthetics and for Critical Care, working alongside Service Line Managers, and led by a Clinical Head of Service and a business unit Operations Director.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration, with licence to practise, or eligible for full GMC registration.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia, or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training at time of interview.
* FRCA or equivalent.
* FFICM or other related professional or higher qualification in critical care medicine.
* Formal teaching qualification or instructor status for relevant courses.
* CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or within 6 months of receipt at time of interview.
Experience
* Experience in Critical Care clinical management, including acute care of emergency patients and paediatric resuscitation.
* Experience in chest wall regional anaesthesia for breast surgery.
* Evidence of independent management of emergency anaesthesia cases and upper airway management.
* Experience in teaching and supervision of junior colleagues and medical students.
* Advanced experience in adult transfer.
* Experience in paediatric stabilisation and transfer.
* Experience in teaching regional anaesthesia.
* Experience in management of trainee educational needs at regional and national level.
* Involvement in clinical audit and quality improvement.
