Job Description:
SEN Teaching Assistant - Hemel Hempstead – Education and Training
Full time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 3:45
This role involves working with children aged 2-19, with a Nursery to KS2 level of cognitive ability. If you have a caring nature and want to be part of a vibrant, empathetic team and school, this position could really appeal to you.
We are looking for a graduate or non-graduate with good instincts for Nursery and early years aged children. This LSA role involves personal care with students who are lively and come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. An interest in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy is an advantage but not essential.
This role is situated in a specialist school for children 2-19, catering to a range of Autism, Complex Social Needs, and academic abilities. You will work with children whose Autism leads to severe learning challenges, some will also have physical disabilities.
Can you make the students’ lives better today, keep them safe, and demonstrate the value of education? You will receive extensive SEN and safeguarding training, including MAPA training.
As an aspiring OT or Speech and Language Therapist, over the course of your qualification, you will need to identify areas of genuine interest and where your skills need enhancement.
Responsibilities include:
1. Physical work combined with being pragmatic to help each child make academic progress.
2. Introducing therapies and holistic processes; recognizing that even small progress is a success.
3. Working with students with Pathological Demand Avoidance and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
4. Focusing on Early Years and Non-Verbal students, employing holistic techniques to gain engagement.
5. Supporting secondary-aged students with learning levels below their stated age.
6. Providing positive engagement and a sense of acceptance, using varied approaches as talking therapy may not always be effective.
It is vital that you are sincere about your objectives and understand why you want to work in the SEN and mental health sector, providing the best possible foundations for vulnerable students who have suffered trauma and have been let down by the adult world. These roles are challenging, requiring months or years to build trust and foundations with vulnerable students and young learners.
