Reporting to the Group Transport Manager, the Transport Manager will manage the day to day running of Cambridge depot transport department, ensuring the safe and compliant operation of our mixed size fleet of vehicles, working in the veterinary and specialist waste collection sectors. As Transport Manager you will lead the transport function (Drivers, Admin and planning staff) ensuring that the drivers operate safely, providing the highest level of service to our customers, whilst optimising vehicles as efficiently as possible ensuring compliance with transport policies, procedures and legislation (e.g. O Licence, Tachograph, and ADR regulations) are adhered to at all times.
Key job responsibilities
1. Oversee daily routes of a fast moving 24 hour operation with both scheduled and adhoc collections nationwide.
2. Ensure drivers daily checks and vehicle defects are actioned, rectifying all vehicle defects in a timely manner through communication with our 3rd party contractors, ensuring all vehicles are fully compliant with statutory obligations.
3. Book relevant MOTs, PMIs, Services and ensure fleet is managed in a legal and compliant manner, recording this in a legally compliant manner following company policy.
4. Ensure all driver tachograph cards are downloaded regularly and inform drivers of any infringements through Tacho FTA system, ensuring all infringements are signed off, recorded and monitoring drivers hours.
5. Debrief all drivers returning to the main operating base as well as those operating from out-bases to ensure all collections/deliveries have been completed successfully. Ensure all driver paperwork has been fully completed and collated for management sign off or billing.
6. Ensure all driver paperwork is collated at end of day and that paperwork and information for next day's work is available prior to shifts.
7. Ensure all drivers have current and relevant licences, with CPC & ADR obligations met.
8. Check tracking system to ensure all deliveries have been completed correctly in the system and highlight any non-compliance.
9. Ensure all drivers follow standard operating procedures when collecting waste and delivering products.
10. Handle customer service and driver enquiries effectively and speedily.
11. Maintain a positive 'can do' attitude along with the rest of the team.
12. Promote best practice.
13. Manage the Transport Planning and Admin staff.
14. Co-operate and work together with all departments both in Cambridge and the wider business to achieve objectives.
15. Fulfil any other reasonable requirement of the department.
Skills and attributes
1. CPC in road haulage.
2. Computer literate, good knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Asset Go, FTA Vision.
3. Previous experience in a similar role is essential.
4. Attention to detail.
5. Flexible and focused on making improvements and maximising resources.
6. Strong organisational skills with paperwork and admin.
