Role Summary
You will act as a key member of the portering supervisory team, ensuring that the portering team provide a smooth transport service to meet the needs of the wards and departments and to ensure that medical records, materials and equipment are safely and appropriately transferred around the hospital.
Main Assignments of Role
1. Monitor the Hive system, ensuring all jobs are completed in a specific time frame.
2. Deal with the allocation of work to portering staff.
3. Ensure that all staff in the main pool are allocated rovers (handheld device) and they are returned at the end of their shift.
4. Ensure that monthly all portering staff log on to the laptop for the Hive/Rover system to ensure they do not require to reset their password and create delays.
5. Liaise and communicate with MFT and Sodexo staff to resolve any issues and respond to ad-hoc requirements.
6. Ensure staff are allocated duties and responsibilities appropriately and receive training to undertake their role.
7. Identify and facilitate training needs for staff including moving and handling training.
8. Ensure all portering staff are wearing full staff uniform including trust ID badges.
9. Take initial calls relating to sickness absence and document the call in a telephone log.
10. Conduct return to work sickness/absence interviews with the portering staff and escalate any issues to the Logistics Manager where appropriate.
11. Ensure all relevant paperwork is returned to the HR office.
12. Management of annual leave requests across the portering team.
13. Undertake monthly Appraisals with portering staff in line with MFT Policies and Procedures.
14. Undertake team briefing of all portering staff monthly and maintain a register for audit purposes.
15. Ensure all portering duties are carried out in strict accordance with Health and Safety legislation.
16. Follow accident reporting procedures and appropriate paperwork where required.
17. Ensure all portering staff adhere to MFT Policies and Procedures and escalate issues of non-compliance to the Logistics Manager where appropriate.
18. Escalate any incidents or complaints to the Logistics Manager where appropriate.
19. Provide cover for supervisory colleagues as and when required.
20. Ensure breaks are monitored and maintain stock within the portering service.
21. Liaise with nursing staff and heads of departments regarding work requests.
22. Resolve any issues that may be reported to you whilst on shift.
23. Operate the ward order communication system.
24. Convey a professional image of the portering department to the client whilst encouraging and maintaining good working relationships with all users of the portering service.
25. Undertake the full range of portering duties when requested and as directed by the Logistics Manager.
26. Take a reading from the franking machine every week and return to the Logistics Manager.
27. Ensure all post rounds go out on time.
28. Ensure all air mail special delivery and recorded mail go out within MFT Guidelines.
29. Ensure all mail being cost coded is recorded in line with MFT Guidelines.
30. Responsible to allocate staff in the event of emergencies to Cardiac Arrest, Fire, Massive Haemorrhage and Helipad.
Additional General Responsibilities
1. Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene in accordance with company policy.
2. Arrive in time for duty and in non-uniform clothes, changing into clean Sodexo uniform and clocking on.
3. Post holders are required to wear their identity badge with a current photograph on at all times.
4. Provide guidance and advice to new team members or relief staff where necessary.
5. Completion of paperwork relevant to post, such as staff surveys and holiday request forms.
6. Workload will be determined by daily requirements, and post-holder may be required to use initiative in order to prioritise tasks and responsibilities.
7. At times you may be required to go and work in other logistics areas to assist with the cover of annual leave and sickness.
8. At times post holders may be required to carry out reasonable additional duties connected to their employment, as directed by their line manager.

1. Good communication skills to enable communication with colleagues, patients and clients regarding on job duties.
2. Ability to work as part of a team.
3. Good level of customer care.
4. Experience of working in a healthcare environment (desirable).
5. Good understanding of health and safety and manual handling practices.
6. Ability to respond constructively and professionally to unpredictable situations.
7. Attend mandatory induction and health and safety related training and all other required training.
Physical Effort / Working Conditions
1. You may be required to work in an obnoxious smelling environment, e.g. urine, vomit, excrement and receiving requests to remove body fluid spillages in public areas where applicable.
2. You may be required to work in an area with Terminally ill and/or aggressive patients.
3. Continuous physical activity may be required, i.e. walking, pushing beds/wheelchairs, pushing trolleys.
Emotional Effort
1. Be able to work under pressure in a busy environment.
2. Able to respond to patient conflict or complaints in a professional manner, escalating or reporting incidents to the Logistics Manager where appropriate.
3. Can be exposed to emotionally distressing or traumatic situations from time to time.
4. Dealing with patient deterioration and bereavement may have an emotional impact on the post holder.
5. Able to balance conflicting and changing priorities within a given time.
6. Dealing with expectations of patients, staff or visitors.
Health and Safety
1. Observe all statutory Health and Safety Regulations. Post holders are responsible for reporting any hazards that are encountered in the workplace. Post holders are also responsible for reporting to your line manager any equipment which is in need of repair.
2. To take reasonable care for your own Health and Safety and that of any other person who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work.
3. Observe and apply all MFT / Sodexo Health and Safety protocols, i.e. use of personal protective equipment (PPE), carrying out the Three Checks for Safety prior to engaging in work tasks.
4. To co-operate with MFT in ensuring that statutory regulations, codes of practice, local policies and departmental health and safety rules are adhered to.
5. Report defects and faults in accordance with company procedures.
6. Report any accidents, incidents, failings in equipment or personal protective equipment.
7. Post holders should not attempt to carry out tasks or repairs beyond their competence.
Infection Control
Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
All staff employed at the Manchester Central Hospitals Trust have the following key responsibilities:
1. Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and between each patient contact.
2. Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by MFT / Sodexo.
3. Staff members who develop recurrent skin and soft tissue infections and other infections that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
