Your Role with us
As a Principal Corporate Property Surveyor, you will manage and oversee property interests for the Defra group, ensuring efficient and effective use of assets. Your role involves both supervisory and transactional responsibilities, combining internal expertise with out-sourced market knowledge. You will provide technical leadership and clear advice on property matters, support estate transformation programs, and ensure that transactions and disposals align with strategic goals.
Key responsibilities include:
* Professional Property Advice: Offer guidance on managing interests (freehold, leasehold, inter-government leases), disposals, acquisitions, lease compliance, and interpreting legal and policy information. Address diverse property matters whilst balancing different priorities to meet Defra Group objectives.
* Outsourced Services Management: Oversee and advise on rent reviews, lease renewals, landlord/tenant issues, and property transactions and land law.
* Environmental and Sustainability Guidance: Provide expertise on environmental and sustainability issues related to commercial properties, including policy development and compliance with standards like Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards.
* Briefings and Correspondence: Prepare and advise on papers for briefings and official correspondence, including complex Parliamentary Questions and public inquiries.
* Workplace Strategy and Performance: Contribute to the Defra Group Workplace Strategy and measure performance against KPIs. Implement improvements based on performance data and ensure strategies align with Government Estates Strategy.
* Integrated Management and Innovation: Collaborate within the team and across Defra Group Property to ensure coordinated activities and strategic thinking. Develop and implement process improvements and innovations to enhance consistency and efficiency.
* Knowledge Management: Utilize data to enhance understanding of property management and performance, driving improvements and ensuring high-quality outcomes.
Who we are looking for
You have these qualifications:
* Professional Qualification: Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) with significant post-qualification experience.
* Professional Membership: Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Specialization in commercial property, property management, lease advisory, or commercial valuation is preferred.
You have these skills and experience:
* Commercial Property Management: Experience managing a complex estate, including commercial property management and lease advisory.
* Operational Delivery: Proven ability to work effectively within an operational delivery environment.
* Reporting and Evidence Gathering: Skilled in producing detailed reports and gathering evidence to support property management activities.
* Third-Party Coordination: Experience working with third-party contractors and other government departments.
* Estate Management: Extensive experience in estate management, including corporate real estate and transactional services.
* Advisory and Transactional Services: Expertise in providing transactional and advisory services, utilizing both in-house knowledge and external professional advisors.
* Specialist Property Advice: Ability to deliver specialist property advice and transactions that align with property strategies and good estate management practices.
* Knowledge Sharing: Capable of sharing technical expertise to enhance the knowledge and competence of colleagues.
* Collaboration: Strong ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across different organizational boundaries.
* Stakeholder Management: Experience managing property within a complex stakeholder and customer environment.
* External Advisors: Proficient in commissioning, supervising, and managing the delivery of services through external property advisors.
