As a result of our continued growth, we are looking for a Technical Manager to help us drive and maintain our high standards and ensure we can continue to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.
About the role
You will be joining a small, high-performing team of professionals who are friendly, supportive and passionate about their roles within the Technical Department and the wider Bakels business.
Reporting to the Head of Technical and Sustainability, you will play a key part in ensuring that our products are manufactured to the highest standards and compliant with all relevant legislation. As our Technical Manager, you will lead our Quality Team and develop a strong culture of quality across our site.
The purpose of your role will be to implement a robust scientific approach and manage company due diligence to ensure products produced are safe and legal. The goal is to develop and implement effective processes and practices, ensuring that products are manufactured in compliance with both legal and customer food safety and quality standards through rigorous validation.
Working hours - days (40 hours per week)
Duties include:
* Ensure the Safety, Legality, Quality and Ethical Integrity of all products produced by the business whilst working closely with the Head of technical and sustainability to implement strategy in line with business plans, driving the technical agenda for the business.
* Leadership and development of a committed Technical Team, providing optimum service to both internal and external customers, including good laboratory practice and a robust scientific approach to their day-to-day activities.
* Working with the Quality System coordinator, Hygiene & Facilities Manager and the site Operations Team, driving technical standards forward and continually improving hygiene, GMP, food safety and compliance standards.
* Retain relevant site accreditations and attain others as required.
* Manage customer complaint/quality failure investigations in a timely manner, including contact with customers and suppliers where appropriate.
* Be the HACCP team leader for the site, ensuring all required validations are taking place and are recorded appropriately.
* Be the voice of authority on technical matters and inspire confidence within other team members.
* Support Operations Manager on improving manufacturing processes.
* Understand export requirements and the international product legislative landscape to ensure relevant systems are in place to ensure compliance.
* Be the key control in any change management process and to sign off and own the content of both raw material and finished product specs.
* Identify and highlight significant shortfalls in areas likely to compromise food safety integrity to the Head of Technical and Sustainability.
* Ensure all relevant stock movement on the ERP system in and out of QMAIN, HOLD and Rework in a timely manner.
* Work with NPD/Purchasing as required in gate process on new products/process changes/trials, etc.
* Ensure all relevant Health and Safety legislation is adhered to and relevant guidance is taken into account in the Company’s policies.
* Support the Head of Technical and Sustainability in developing a high-performing technical function.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will need to be a strong, influential and motivational leader, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrating clarity of direction. Specific requirements include:
* Minimum HACCP Level 3 (Level 4 desirable) and preferably BRC Lead auditor qualified. Significant experience working with the BRC standard and a strong knowledge of allergens and Food Legislation. International food legislation, specifically FDA experience, would be an advantage.
* Significant experience working with retail customers and an understanding of retail codes of practice and their web-based systems.
* Customer-focused with a natural ability to develop first-rate customer relationships in order to facilitate current and future business development opportunities.
* A good understanding of raw materials and their specifications as well as a thorough understanding of finished product specifications and a desire to “own” these.
* A users' knowledge of standard software systems.
* Experience in UK retailers and have an understanding of Customer Codes of practice and specific certification requirements, e.g. RSPO, HALAL, BRC requirements.
* A passion for food safety and customer/specification compliance.
* Experience in scientific validation of process and product.
* Organisational agility and ‘know-how’ to get things done, both through formal channels and informal networks.
* Support the development of the British Bakels quality culture and lead by example in corrective and preventive action planning and delivery.
