At Leonardo, we are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer working within the development and delivery of Communications and Electronic Counter Measure Products.
This role requires the Mechanical Engineer to develop novel solutions to overcome challenges set by our Customers and will build on decades of domain leading heritage.
The successful candidate will be involved in the development of peers, passing on experiences and imbuing best practices to assist with the continued growth and development of the Mechanical Team.
All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills within design, structural & thermal analyses and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.
Leonardo offers a mixture of on-site and remote working; with attendance at our Southampton facility required when Programme requirements dictate.
Applicants must be eligible to meet full UK Security Clearance and ITAR classification requirements.
What you’ll do as a Lead Mechanical Engineer:
1. Responsible for Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, testability, sustainability, etc.
2. Approval and ownership of Mechanical solutions for harsh environments (Shock, Vibration, EMC, RADHAZ, salt fog, etc)
3. Ensuring quality and consistency of detailed design, including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
4. Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (preferably PTC Creo)
5. Support successful resolution of technical problem investigations.
6. Review and approval of sub-contractor solutions, included test and validation plans.
7. Support the development of Mechanical Engineers with the local Team.
8. Chair reviews of Mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
9. Support the creation of Functional Processes and Best Practices.
10. Actively manage Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.
What we need from you:
Essential Skills, Qualification and Experience:
11. A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or
12. Equivalent experience in the field of Defence and/or naval environments.
13. Mechanical engineering for Electro-mechanical products.
14. Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
15. Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
16. Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
17. Experienced in various aspects of DfX, including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
18. Leading a Team of Mechanical Engineer’s across multiple Programmes
Desirable:
19. MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
20. Experience with the mechanical design of RF Products.
21. Understanding of CONOPS to aid Requirements Management and technical solutions.
22. Integration of equipment onto Military vehicles, Command posts and Naval vessels, including 19” rack cabinets, cable management, HFI, etc.
23. Capable of producing ‘first pass’ (structural and thermal) analyses to determine if a design is fit-for-purpose i.e. using PTC Simulate, flow or similar.
24. Understanding of Model Based Design (i.e. MATLAB, Simulink, etc)
25. Mechanical Engineering industry trends - knowledge of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
