M Group Services is recruiting for a Group Commercial Director to become a part of our expanding Central Commercial Function.
Within this role, you’ll be a key part of our Central Commercial team, who are responsible for providing oversight of commercial performance, processes and teams across the Group’s operating businesses.
Given the rapid growth that the Group has experienced over recent years (both organic and through acquisition), you will be a valued part of the Group Commercial team, working to actively manage our commercial risks and opportunities across the Group.
Within this role, you’ll have the opportunity to implement effective processes and controls in place to govern our commercial position with clients and sub-contractors.
You will provide support to the COO in improving the performance of the Group through developing and leading a wide range of planning, performance improvement and commercial activities, including the integration of new acquisitions.

Key Responsibilities:
* Commercial Strategy:
o Develop and implement the commercial strategy for MGS which drives EBITDA & margin enhancement and alignment with overall business objectives.
o Support the divisional work winning process and the development of pricing / margin strategies, bid reviews, and contract negotiations.
o Identify and implement improvement opportunities to standardise and automate commercial / CVR processes including focus on controls.
o Ensure that commercial activities align with the MGS' long-term strategic goals.
* CVR Process & Risk Management:
o Monitor and manage the financial performance of all framework / project contracts to ensure profitability and cost efficiency.
o Carry out regular review process with divisional Commercial Directors / teams to ensure compliance with commercial reporting rules - ensure project margins are maintained or improved.
o Identify, assess, and manage commercial risks associated with frameworks / projects, including financial, contractual, and operational risks.
o Support the resolution of contractual issues, including disputes, claims, and variations, with a focus on mitigating risks and safeguarding company interests.
* Tendering and Bid Management:
o Support the preparation of tenders and bids for new framework / projects, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness.
o Ensure that tenders are aligned with the company’s financial objectives, risk appetite and alignment to SoDA.
o Collaborate with legal and project teams to ensure contracts are compliant with project-specific requirements.
o Develop relationships with key divisional, group and external stakeholders to enhance the company's position in the tendering process.
* Reporting and Analysis:
o Provide regular reports to the executive team on the commercial performance of projects, including financial status, risks, and opportunities.
o Identify cost-saving opportunities through procurement and value engineering.
o Track and report on project cash flow, revenue forecasts, and financial health, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
o Recommend improvements to commercial processes and systems based on insights from reporting.
* Team Leadership and Development:
o Support divisional commercial teams – coaching, mentorship and development – to ensure a high-performing commercial team.
o Set performance targets and KPIs for the commercial team, ensuring accountability and alignment with company goals.
o Create a collaborative and results-driven culture within the commercial department.
* Stakeholder Engagement:
o Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and government authorities.
o Serve as the primary point of contact for commercial issues and negotiations with clients and partners.
o Represent the company in client meetings, industry conferences, and networking events to promote the business and generate new opportunities.
o Engage with internal teams, including finance, operations, and legal, to ensure smooth project execution.
Key Qualifications:
* Education:
o Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (MBA or advanced degree in a commercial discipline is advantageous).
o Relevant professional certifications such as MRICS (Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) or MCIOB (Member of the Chartered Institute of Building) are preferred.
* Experience:
o 10+ years of experience in commercial management within the construction or engineering industry.
o Proven track record of managing large-scale framework / projects with a focus on commercial success and profitability.
o Strong experience in contract negotiation, cost control, and risk management.
o Experience working with different contract types (e.g., JCT, NEC, FIDIC).
* Skills:
o Excellent understanding of construction contracts, procurement processes, and project management methodologies.
o Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and manage a team.
o Exceptional negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
o Analytical and problem-solving abilities, with strong financial acumen.
o Proficiency in commercial management software, contract management tools, and financial systems.
