This is a training post, to learn the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a registered pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). The role involves working under supervision with the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to carry out the required duties of a registered pharmacy technician.
To assist the Dispensary Manager to ensure all tasks in the pharmacy dispensary are completed as per objectives and to provide work within the wider healthcare team to deliver comprehensive, optimised pharmaceutical services while maintaining a high level of security.
Main duties of the job
1. Undertake a two-year training programme to qualify as a pharmacy technician.
2. Support the Medicines Management Team with the delivery of a legal, safe, high-quality pharmaceutical service.
3. Support the development of medicines optimisation standard operating procedures and pharmacy service protocols.
4. Assist with daily administration of controlled drugs (as second signatory) and update Controlled Drug registers (paper or electronic) while instructing clinical staff in correct procedures for record keeping, security, and storage of controlled drugs.
5. Assist in the medicine reconciliation process by completing medication histories using the most recent, relevant sources available.
6. Organise and provide a supply of stock and non-stock pharmaceuticals and manage medicines management systems to ensure the efficient, safe, and secure handling of medicines.
7. Regularly review stock usage with nursing staff.
8. Be fully conversant with the SystmOne (clinical system) in maintaining patient electronic health records.
9. Promote and work in line with a 7-day a week service model.

Job responsibilities
1. Ensure medication requests are ordered before cut-off times for timely delivery to the house units.
2. For specific patients requiring medication from secondary care, assist in organising systems to order these in a timely manner.
3. Ensure all medicines are ordered and supplied in accordance with relevant legislation, local standard operating procedures, and Trust Medicines Policy.
4. Participate in medicines management team meetings and primary care team meetings as required.
5. Maintain high levels of safety and security and be constantly vigilant.
6. Ensure pharmaceuticals are transported within the prison maintaining integrity and security while adhering to necessary safety precautions.
Person Specification
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
* 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C (4-9) in Maths, English, and 2 Sciences.
