Job Description Share Share Share Post-16 Teaching Assistant Location: North Shields, Newcastle Salary: £75 - £100 per day Start Date: ASAP GSL Education’s Newcastle branch is seeking an experienced and motivated Post-16 Teaching Assistant to support students in further education settings across North Shields. This role is perfect for individuals passionate about helping older students succeed both academically and personally, as they transition into adulthood and prepare for their next steps in higher education, apprenticeships, or the workforce. Job Summary As a Post-16 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students aged 16-19 who may require additional support due to special educational needs (SEN), disabilities, or personal circumstances. You will assist in the classroom, help students with their studies, and offer guidance on social and emotional well-being. You will also take on additional responsibilities, such as working with teaching staff on educational plans, liaising with parents, and helping students develop life skills. Key Responsibilities For Post-16 Teaching Assistant Provide one-to-one and small group support to students aged 16-19 in both academic and vocational subjects. Assist students with SEN, disabilities, or additional learning needs, ensuring they have equal access to the curriculum. Support students in developing essential life skills, including study techniques, time management, and employability skills. Work alongside teaching staff to adapt and deliver lessons that cater to students' individual needs. Encourage students’ independence by promoting self-advocacy and supporting them in managing their own learning and personal development. Provide pastoral care, offering support for emotional and social issues that may impact a student’s progress. Monitor student progress, contributing to regular reviews of Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) or other personalised learning plans. Assist with exam preparation and coursework, helping students develop effective study habits. Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and other staff to ensure students receive holistic support. Communicate with parents/carers and external agencies where necessary to provide updates on progress and any areas of concern. Ensure safeguarding policies and practices are followed, reporting any concerns to senior staff in line with school procedures. Support off-site activities, including educational trips, work placements, or extracurricular activities, where applicable. Essential Requirements For Post-16 Teaching Assistant Experience working with students aged 16 in a school, college, or further education setting. A relevant qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, SEN, or Childcare is desirable (e.g. NVQ Level 3 or equivalent). Strong understanding of the challenges faced by post-16 students, including those with SEN or disabilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with students, staff, and parents. Ability to manage challenging behaviour with a calm, supportive, and solution-focused approach. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Experience supporting students with exam preparation, coursework, and study skills is highly desirable. A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. An enhanced DBS check registered to the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for one.
