The role
As a Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, within the Assurance Directorate, provides compelling advice and regulatory interface on nuclear safety, radiological safety, radioactive waste management and assurance of compliance with legal and contractual requirements.
Day-to-day, the main core activity of IPR is the examination of the Site Safety Justification i.e., Plant Safety Cases, Modifications, Forward Action Plans (FAPs) and Concessions, against the Company’s safety principles, criteria and standards. The examination can involve checks on a Safety Case’s completeness, logic and methodology.
1. Conduct Independent Peer Review, in accordance with established procedures, of safety documents and policy, methodology, strategy and guidance documents generated under arrangements to satisfy the BMS, Nuclear Site Licence and MoD Authorisation.
2. As required, and on behalf of the Independent Peer Review Manager (IPRM), present the findings of Peer Review to the members of the Nuclear Safety Committee.
3. Manage the conduct of consultants sub-contracted for the execution of external Peer Review as lead assessor.
4. Assist in formulating IPR strategy and policy to address emergent issues.
5. Preparation of Peer Review reports to the required standards and timescales, their incorporation in the SCaNDS/IPR database and ultimately the Licensee’s documentation archive (via Safety Documentation records).
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with typically 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor
6. General experience of safety related engineering in a high hazard industry
7. Significant experience in the conduct of safety analysis, ideally in a through life support environment, including Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), fault tree analysis etc. in support of probabilistic and deterministic safety assessments
8. Experience in the development, management and analysis of fault schedules and the derivation of safety functional requirements
9. Experience of authoring safety case claims, arguments and evidence to demonstrate how risks are being managed and controlled
10. A thorough understanding of Naval Base infrastructure with a detailed understanding of submarine engineering would be advantageous
Qualifications for the Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor
11. Degree in an appropriate Scientific or Engineering discipline
12. Chartered accreditation by an appropriate Professional Institution
13. NUC Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent) (Babcock are happy to put you through this)
14. NUC Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent) (Babcock are happy to put you through this)
15. NUC Introduction to Safety Engineering (Babcock are happy to put you through this)

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
